"Update is ready to install"

I keep getting this message popping up from my task bar which says "Update is ready to install". It is an Adobe Reader Installer, and when I follow the instructions it goes up to a certain point and never seems to complete the update. When I look up my All Programs list, I have Adobe Reader 9.5.0, Adobe Premier Standard, Adobe Flash Player 11 Active and Adobe Flash Player 11 Plug In. What do all these mean? Do I need to actually get this Adobe Updater done? I use Windows XP Professional.

Thanks in advance.

Roger

adobe reader is at version 11.0.03

first I would uninstall all adobe reader on your pc, reboot and then go to adobe and download the latest version of reader:

    http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

    afterwards

    1. what is your current antivirus?
    2. do the following to ensure your system is clean, since adobe is blocked from updating probably from malware:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

    msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All (Ctrl-A), Copy (Ctrl-C) and then paste (Ctrl-V) the information back here in your next reply.

You can edit out any personal information.

Download, install, update and do full scan with these free malware detection programs:

    Malwarebytes (MBAM):  http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

    SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS):  http://www.superantispyware.com/

Remove all found, reboot, and run again until scans run clean, these can be removed afterwards if you so choose.

Sorry, but I seem to be going backwards, not forwards. I keep getting the Adobe Installer error messages after installation reaches about 50% or 60%.

    1. How do I "open antivirus and disable realtime scanning"? I don't know what this means.
    2. How do I do malware scans? I'm afraid I don't know the difference between malware/antivirus etc. I thought once I install antivirus it just looks after itself..........

I know you must be reaching the limits of your patience with me, so please don't worry if you have to abandon me as a lost cause.

    Thanks again.

update to sp3 manually from the link in my previous reply

then go to microsoft update and install ALL priority updates, this will be lengthy

afterwards do a custom scan and install any Rootkit updates, I will check back in am.

    Thank you.

I have installed Service Pack 3.

When I tried to install the updates at Microsoft Update, I ended up with an error message:  "0x80240036".

When I check the Security Centre for anti-virus software I get a message that says: "AVG Anti-Virus Edition 2013 is upto date and scanning".

I'm going to try updating Adobe Reader again. If I fail, could you recomend any other software other than Adobe?
