How to use the United States-International keyboard in Windows 8

Hi,

I cannot find a way to setup US International keyboard input in Windows 8. This is really frustrating since I like to work with an English keyboard but I often have to write spanish accents or special characters.

Regards, Miguel.

Hi,

Took me a little while to figure it out as it's somehow not obviously accessible...

Please, try the following. Go to "Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language" click on English (United States) ... "options", then "Add an input method", search for [QWERTY] United States-International Touch Keyboard layout (in my case) or similar; then "Add".

Once it shows up the international sort, REMOVE the default English input method.

You should be able then to do ñ, á é í ó ú in no time by pressing first the accent and then the letter

Then hold Ctrl and Alt + ! to make ¡

Then hold Ctrl and Alt + ? to make ¿

I hope this helps,

Pablo

The previous description of how to write the characters isn't accurate. It is actually simpler.

Instead, follow these steps (for Windows 8):

    Add the United States-International Keyboard

    1. Open the control panel (To do this, click the "My PC" icon in the start menu, which will open a window. At the top of the window there is a list of options. Click "Open control panel")
    2. Click "Clock, Language, and Region," then click "Language."
    3. In the Language window, you should have "English (United States)" selected by default and highlighted in blue. Next to "English (United States)" click "Options."
    4. In the "Language options" window, it will list Input method. Click "add and input method."
    5. Scroll down until you see QWERTY "United States-International Touch keyboard layout." Click it, then click "add" at the bottom of the window.
    6. You will be returned to the "Language options" window. Confirm that you have both "US" and "US-International" listed under "Input method," then click Save.

Use your United States-International Keyboard to type Spanish characters

First, you need to enable your new keyboard. Next to the clock at the very bottom of your screen you will see that a new icon has been added. It should say "ENG." Clicking this button will allow you to toggle between your active keyboard input methods. Click the ENG button and select the ENG-INTL option. You can now type in Spanish quickly and easily!

For   á é í ó ú ñ   press and hold the RIGHT Alt, then press the letter key.

For   **¡ ¿**press and hold the RIGHT Alt, then press the key with the ! or ? symbol.

For   Á É Í Ó Ú Ñ   press and hold the RIGHT Alt key and the Shiftkey simultaneously, then press the letter key.

Very rarely, you may need to type ü or Ü in Spanish.

For   ü press and hold the RIGHT *Alt,*then press the Y key.

For   Ü press and hold the RIGHT Alt key and the Shiftkey simultaneously*,* then press the Y key.

Note: While using the US-International keyboard, your   '  and   "   will function differently. To use these characters in the US-International keyboard, you will need to hit the '  or  " key, then hit the Space Bar to display the character. Remember, you can always click the button next to the clock to switch back to your normal ENG-US keyboard.

Thanks Vijay but neither of these solutions work. The problem is that there is no input method or language for US International as there was on Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

Do you know of a workaround for this?

    Thanks in advance. MIguel.
