I have just completed running a cmd.exe on my external hard disk drives and I have the case that I have the following:

  1. My desktop has FILE000.CHK files on it.
  2. My external disk drive (Seagate 1TB) has FILE.000 folder with one file called File0000.chk in it.
  3. My Flash disk has dir000.chk folders on it.

I am a beginner and I am finding it hard to operate the following:

I have enclosed the results of what the above look like - I just wish to know if it I can gain some easy guide on how to use the .exe software or is it worth just deleting the information.

That is what I was looking at first - 7 Ways To Recover CHK Files Created by CHKDSK and SCANDISK

Most of them I have uploaded and they are zip files. They are quite hard for me to try and navigate. I am not too sure if I am going to be able to retrieve any data.

I also found this- Recover CHK Files

I have a lot of zip files and .exe files on my desktop. I also have some directories or folders that may have been deleted - unsure what extension that would go under for the folders.

Is the Unchk.exe is a utility for reading .chk files just drag and drop any .chk file onto it and it will attempt to start recovery of said file

I may have lost them. How can you also ensure that you never have it happen to you again?

Chk files are remnants of files recovered by chkdsk when it encounters corrupted files. You can normally open them by double clicking on the file in Windows Explorer. Most of the time it is a waste of time trying to reconstruct a corrupted file. I just delete them.

The important thing to do is to stop whatever is corrupting files from corrupting further files. The chkdsk report on your F partition looks fine.

    Did you try CHK Mate?

Also, have a look at here for reference:

I have tried everything on the internet - from the third party kind.

Never again - especially if you do not know what you are doing and only a beginner.

Thanks for answering this question. I was at a loss at what had caused this problem. I had person advise me to run this Windows command. My disk is near full, so I must transfer it, so double checked it without compromising and scanning my computer and registry by a third party. It is 1TB.

http://www.ericphelps.com/uncheck/ - This is what I had been advised - but at a very big loss. I gather once it is lost, it is lost.

I appreciate your assistance, as you have answered my other questions on a slow computer. Thanks for your time. Autoruns -- well that was better than Process Explorer.
