Why do you have to uninstall the card reader? You can upgrade to Windows 8 without uninstalling the card reader also.

If you need to uninstall the card reader, go to start->type devmgmt.msc->press enter. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller->look for Realtek PCIE Card Reader. Double click on it->go to Driver tab. Click Uninstall (select Delete the software for this device to uninstall the device completely) to uninstall the device.

Note: Multiple drivers may be present (like SD controller, xD controller, MemoryStick controller). Uninstall them individually.

You are somewhat correct, but mostly wrong.

    1.  "Why do you have to uninstall the card reader?  You can upgrade to Windows 8 without uninstalling the card reader also."  Wrong.  You cannot not.  The upgrade will fail prompting one to uninstall the card reader.

    2.  "If you need to uninstall the card reader, go to start->type devmgmt.msc->press enter. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller->look for Realtek PCIE Card Reader. Double click on it->go to Driver tab. Click Uninstall (select Delete the software for this device to uninstall the device completely) to uninstall the device."  This may possibly work, if the card reader is present there.  nine times out of ten, it is not.

    3.  To proceed with the Win8 Upgrade do the following:

         A.  Uninstall the device from the "Uninstall a program" applet within Control Panel.

         B.  Once uninstalled, delete the following registry entry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\RSPCIESTOR

**** C.  Right click on RSPCIESTOR and choose delete.

No need to restart at this point, proceed with Win8 Upgrade.

This is the correct answer right here. Thanks dude.
