Optiarc bd rom bc-5500h Won't read most DVDs

I have a Sony VAIO PC (VPCL137FX), using Windows 7 Home Premium. My DVD/CD ROM, an Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500H has not been working properly for the last month or so... it just won't read most of the CDs/DVDs I put into it with the exception of a very few. It is supposed to read Blu ray as well but it has not been able to for a while. According to the Device Manager all drivers are up to date, I even tried that Microsoft FixIt tool but to no avail. I tried to find something in the Sony Website but all info it has is about the 5500S model like mine didn't even exist in the first place. I don't know what to do with it anymore, so I'd be really grateful with any help or advice I can get.

Regards

Moses S.

    Hi Moses,

I would suggest you to go through the article and follow the steps given.

Open the Playing and Burning CDs, DVDs, and Blu‑ray Discs troubleshooter

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/open-the-playing-and-burning-cds-dvds-and-bluray-discs-troubleshooter

You can also try the steps given in the following Microsoft knowledge base article.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the link to view the article:

    Back up the registry

If the issue persists, then I would suggest you to contact a hardware technician to replace the drive.

Feel free to join us for any further queries.

Had it replaced in the end, did it as an opportunity to clean it all anyways. But it is a good maintenance tip! So thanks. For some reason this new drives seem to be more problematic, it is the hardware really : /

    Same problem here ...

I solved it by opening the tray and blowing the little glass sensors with compressed air (part of the tray mechanism that actually emits light to read any given disc; on my optiarc drive, they look like two tiny glass ) ...

this completely solved the issue and the drive no reads all discs fine ...

    Best of luck.

Hi! And thanks a lot for your reply

Tried all of that, now it seems to attempt to read what I put into it but still can't do it, in the end it is the same result. I guess its the hardware then : /

Anyways, thanks a lot, at least I know what to do next.

    Regards
