I've recently installed 2x2Gb and 1x4Gb of ddr3 ram but when I go to 'System' it shows 5Gb (1.99Gb usable) I'm running 64 bit operating system and an intel core i7 processor and i have no idea why this is showing only 1.99Gb usable and 5Gb installed when im running a total of 8Gb

From this configuration you are running a 1st issue iSeries Intel 1366 triple channel processor?

The system will clock all memory the same so the 1600 will be clocked down.

The reported memory does not match the possibility that one DIMM has been missed. The only possibility is they are all dual banked (double sided) and only one bank has been detected.

Check the motherboard manual but you may have to run in Dual channel mode and use 2 and 4 for the 2GB and 1 for the 4GB.

    Hello there!

What is the amount of Memory(RAM) detected by your BIOS? Does the BIOS see the total amount of installed Memory?

Please verify this once by going to your BIOS menu. If the BIOS is not detecting the total installed amount of installed Memory as well, it could well be a misconfiguration issue. Probably the Memory sticks are not plugged into the proper ports that accept the particular frequency. In this case you will have to contact the Motherboard manufacturer support once to see what frequencies are supported and in which slots.

I hope this puts some more insight to the issue at hand.

Does your motherboard/system support that type of memory configuration?

And did you buy memory guaranteed to be compatible?
