Original title: Garry's Mod 13

I was trying to open Garrys Mod to play it...I have not played it in about a year, but it worked perfectly fine then...So I open the game up, and it goes to the loading screen for about 5-10 seconds, then immediately it crashes, with no error messages at all...it doesnt shrink the program, it just takes me straight to the desktop and the program closes...If anyone has a solution to this please help...

    Hi Tyler,

Did you try to uninstall and reinstall the game as suggested by Kevin?

You may check if the game is compatible with Windows 8. Contact the game manufacturer. To troubleshoot the compatibility issue, uninstall the game in install it in compatibility mode. To do so, you will need to uninstall the game and when installing; right-click on the game and click 'Troubleshoot compatibility mode'. Follow the procedure and select either Windows 7 or vista from the list to check if it works. Here is an article which will explain more about compatibility mode:

You also told it worked perfectly fine an year ago, which operating system was it installed back then?

Hope the information helps. Keep us updated on the status of the issue.

    Hi Tyler,

It would be helpful if you could check the Event Viewer logs for the error message tracked when accessing the game.

    -          Press the Windows key and the X key and select Event Viewer.

    -          Browse Windows logs on the left pane and then select Applications.

    -          Check the warnings and error message. If you encounter an error message that occurred when accessing Garry’s mod 13 game, then please provide us the error details.

As a work around, you may consider uninstalling and re-installing the game and check if that makes a difference.

Also, update the Video Drivers installed for the computer as most of games nowadays require a high graphics and latest Direct X. So updating the video drivers may help in this case.

    -          Press the Windows key and the X key and select Device Manager.

    -          Browse Display Adapters, right click on the video driver and select Update driver Software.

Let us know if the troubleshooting steps help. If the issue persists, please get back to us with the Event Viewer logs.

Ok so I did what you said. Firstly, everything I have is up to date. Second, I went to the event viewer and I saw 2 events that coulkd be a cause  at least I think... One was called gupdate, and it said:

"The description for Event ID 0 from source gupdate cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

    Service started"

And the other was an error called User Profile Service and it said:

"Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards."

I was thinking that this could have happened to gmod because it says it may not function properly afterwards...If either of these could be a cause let me know...
