    Hi Brian,

This could be an issue with the DVD or the DVD drive that is unable to play it.

    1)      Is this issue specific to a particular DVD?

    2)      Which type of content are you trying to run/play from the DVD?

I would suggest you to run the Microsoft Fixit to fix issues with CD/DVD and check if it resolves the issue. You can follow the methods:

    Method 1:

Refer to the link to run the fixit:

"Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can’t read or write media    "

    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd\_dvd\_drive\_problems

Check if it finds and fixes any issues. If not, proceed to next method.

    Method 2:

I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the DVD driver from the Device Manager and check if it resolves the issue. You can follow the steps:

    a)            Click on Start menu and type “device manager” in the search box.

    b)            Select Device Manager from the list.

    c)            Locate the CD/DVD drive.

    d)            Expand the DVD drives and right click on the driver.

    e)            Select Uninstall from the list.

    f)             Follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall the drive.

    g)            Restart the computer. Check if Windows reinstalls the drivers for the DVD drive. Check if the issue still persists with the DVD drive.

Please get back to us with the status of this issue.

    Hi John,

I would like to inform you that Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro don't come with DVD playback capability. So when you try running a DVD on Windows 8.1 machines through Windows Media Player, it won't play them. Here's the link to find out more about this info:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/dvd-playback-help

You can also refer to the suggestion from John Rubdy in the link provided below:

For any other queries on Windows 8.1, please post them in the right category:

Choose appropriate option  from the drop down menu according to the issue you experience and then post your question.

Please feel free to seek any other assistance on Windows.

I have an ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U that recognizes the DVD (movie) under File Explorer (gets the title and the file tree of the DVD), but Windows Media Player does not play it.  The top ribbon of WMP displays "Unknown Disc" and the regarding the contents displays "The disc is empty."  When I go to the Options menu on Windows Media Player, under Devices the DVD displays the title -- so the disc is not empty.

I am running windows 8.1 on a HP split laptop.

And the DVD works in other devices, so it is not the DVDs I have been testing.

Can you provide some help?  Thanks.
