Thanks for the registry tips. I managed to find and fix the problem. I tried setting paint.net as the default open program, and it opened in paint.net and previewed in Photo Viewer. So I figured it was something astray with Photoshop. Under HKEY_Classes_Root\Photoshop.JPEGFile.9\shell there was a folder/key for "preview". I deleted that, and now it opens in photoshop and previews in Photo Viewer.
Want to preview with Photo Viewer and open with Photoshop
Hi. In all previous versions of Windows I've been able to do this. Right click on an image, and the "Preview" option would open the image in Windows Photo Viewer, and the "Open" option would open it in Photoshop (or whatever editor I had chosen). I've just installed Windows 7 and I seem unable to get it to do this. If I select "Photo Viewer" as the default program for jpgs, I get TWO "Preview" options in the right click menu. Both will open it in Photo Viewer. If I select Photoshop as the default program for jpgs, I get both a "Preview" and "Open" option, but both open the image in Photoshop.
How can I configure it to "preview" with Photo Viewer, and "open" with Photoshop?

It may be specific to the older version you have installed. It might be worth asking in the Adobe Forums (I have no other recommendation, sorry).

2013-08-23T15:28:33+00:00 Hi. Thanks for the reply. I doubt it's an issue with third-party software (Photoshop CS2). It seems to be an issue with how the Windows menu is working.
I tried creating a new user and the same behaviour has transferred across to it. It has inherited the program defaults that I set in my original user account.
I've tried the various ways of setting program defaults, and it results in the same behaviour.

After you do that, preview should open in preview and open should open in PS. if this works correctly, there is info at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html to restore default file associations which you might try in the afflicted original user.
(what version of photoshop?)
most of the people that answer questions here are volunteers (like myself). please be patient if you do not get an immediate reply, especially for issues that involve third party software.
