There is a BIOS setting to reverse the function of the Fn key so the default is the white text (f1, f2 etc.) and the glyphs are only active with the Fn key held.

Press the F10 key when the HP Logo shows on power up to get into the BIOS. Set Action keys mode to disabled.

There might be an easier way but it varies between PC makers.

Press the Windows key & the X key.  This will open the Windows Mobility Center - a utility that you will find has been customised by HP.

They might have provided an entry for "Function key behaviour" that allows you to switch between "Multi-media keys" & "Functions keys".  You could then normally have the benefit of quick access to the multi-media uses of these keys but deliberately switch this off when you want to use those applications for which it proves awkward.

Similarly, while the keys are set as multi-media keys you should be able to press the Fn key with the F1-12 key to get it to operate as a normal F1-12 key.  And when they are all set to be normal F1-12 function keys, you could press Fn with the F1-12 key to get them to operate as multi-media keys.  *In other words, using the Fn key with the Function key reverses whatever is set up as its normal behaviour.*Again, this varies with PC makers but is a fairly common capability so try it to see if it applies to your PC.

Have a look at yor Fn Key and make sure it is not stuck down, give it a couple of hard taps.

What do you mean by "Press the F10 key when the HP Logo shows on power up to get into the BIOS". I still don't get it...

And, what is BIOS? How can I open it?

The BIOS (it stands for Basic Input/Output System) is the system which initially starts the computer. It runs basic tests on the memory, detects what drives are connected and sets the system up before handing control over to the operating system. It has a section of memory built in which contains various settings which defines how the computer is set up.

After powering on the computer should show an HP logo and if you tap the F10 key when this appears it should go into BIOS setup mode. How this is operated varies slightly according to the age of the computer but there should be a row of option across the top or down the side. Use the arrow key to select Advanced then look for the Action Keys option and set it to disabled. In disabled mode the keys work as normal Function keys unless the Fn key is pressed.
