How to fix sound on Dell Optiplex 745 computer

Had a Dell Optiplex 745 computer running Microsoft XP that failed. Purchased a rebuilt Dell Optiples 745 computer running Windows 7 premium. Connected equipment to new computer remained unchanged from original computer. Sound worked O.K. on old XP computer but does not work on new Windows 7 computer. Can anyone advise how to get sound from new computer?

Thanks for any help provided.

The Dell 745 is technically not supported under Windows 7 so there are no drivers listed for it. However I have found the Windows 7 combo cabs available herehttp://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/enterprise-client/w/wiki/2065.dell-driver-cab-files-for-enterprise-client-os-deployment.aspx about half way down the page has resolved a lack of Windows 7 drivers for both older Dell and for that matter non Dell hardware on occasions. Scroll down to about half way down the page. Although the specific OptiPlex model is not listed pointing the driver update wizard to the cab file seems to work.

Thanks HairyFool for your reply. I can open the link you reference and page down to the Optiplex section. However, I'm at a loss to find the driver update wizard you mention. There is a Dell driver update utility available for download for $29.95? Is this the wizard you reference? Even then I don't know how to point it at the closest Cab file (Windows 7 Optiplex 760, 780, etc.) as you direct? Any additional detail would be much appreciated. By the way I would have never found the solution you propose so much thanks for your input!!

P.S. I had to repeat this information since Reply Tab does not work on this site on my computer? Hopefully HairyFool will get this message and answer again!

I was unable to use this method to load a windows 7 sound driver to my Dell optiples 745 computer However, I did find a solution to my dilemna from another site. Go to the following Dell driver link

    http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/optiplex-745

Then follow through and select the Vista audio driver (use 32 or 64 bit depending on your system). Mine is 32 bit. You will only find one audio driver listed. Open it and download it using run upon download.  Override any alert that this driver is not proper for your computer. Once this driver has been activated (run) you should have sound on your Dell Optples 745 computer.

Open Device Manager and  look for the problem device. Double click to open the properties and on the Driver tab there should be an option to Update driver. Click on that and select the Browse option. Navigate to where you have expanded the file you downloaded, make sure the search subfolders option is selected. If the matching driver exists it will install.

The only caveat I will make is Dell has updated these files and the current one is V3. I have V1 as well and there appears to be some differences in what is included and some seem to have been dropped.
