realtek PCIe GBE family controller issue. code 31

I just did an upgrade to windows 8 last night and things seem to be working fine except I am now seeing that my realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller has a yellow caution symbol when viewing device manager. When I went to update drivers it was installing and then said there was an issue updating the drivers and gave error code 31. Properties says drivers cant be loaded and gives same error code 31. Not sure what this controller does but I cant seem to get it to work properly. Any thoughts ? Not sure why after upgrading to windows 8 I would have this issue right off the bat. Also action center identified a problem with communication with the modem and suggested I reboot it but I didnt have any other issues with any other devices in the house. any help is appreciated.

OK guys! Super easy fix, not as hard as you think. I recommend doing two things simultaneously as I did, but either one of them (or both) was the correct fix. I just did them at the same time.

    1. Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk clean up, (c) drive for me, the main drive i guess, i'm not a computer wiz by all means so this should give you even more hope. I just clicked temp files, recycling bin, stuff that seemed to junk up memory unnecessarily, but  I did leave system error logs alone just in case to check report
    2. I went to control panel, programs, and UNINSTALL THE LATEST JAVA UPDATE, I did recall it was after updating this java one night I couldn't go online the next time (a night or two after)

That's it! I rebooted and VOILA! No joke, I have internet connection again!

FYE: yes I tried system restore, replugging both ethernet connection and power cord and a couple other things I read online. BUT THIS WORKS! Apparently there was a corrupt file which I deleted during disk clean up or just uninstalled a bad Java Update which turned off/ disrupted communication from my comp and its device drivers.

    Anyways, give it a try!

Thanks for the comments slance310 but unfortunately none of that worked. I first tried to uninstall the device but as soon as I hit uninstall I immediately received a windows error "Kernal_Security_Check_Failure" and then it gathered some information and rebooted. I then tried to disable fast startup and I shut down and rebooted my computer and its still showing the same yellow caution symbol and error code 31 for not being able to install the drivers.

    Any other ideas?

    Hi,

Only one other suggestion, although someone else may have a better one. I had a similar problem when I first installed Win 8, but it was eventually resolved either by installing newer drivers, or reinstalling Win 8 "Clean".

You might try checking with the computer manufacturer or RealTek for newer drivers instead of "Updating" in Device Manager if that is what you are doing...

There is a Win 8\8.1 driver installation program available from RealTek at this link part way down.

    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

In my case, I original updated Win 7 to Win 8, and I think this was what caused the problem.

After reinstalling Win 8 "Clean" the problem was gone... if I remember correctly.

Hopefully that won't apply to you.

    Hi,

This controller is for your internet connection plug... RJ-45.

Try right clicking on it in Device manager and selecting "Uninstall". Then reboot your computer...

    Another thing to try...

Win 8 has a new feature called Fast Startup. It can sometimes cause problems like you mention as well as others.

The easiest way to tell if this is the problem is to turn it off and see what happens.

This feature only works when you do a SHUTDOWN and then Boot.

    It doesn't effect a RESTART.

To turn it off or on...

Go to Control panel...Power Options, and select Choose What the Power Buttons Do on the left.

Then select Change Settings That Are Currently Unavailable near the top center of screen...

Lower down on the window, uncheck Fast Startup.

This may or may not help your problem, but is easy to check.

If this resolves the problem, then you can investigate what isn't loading properly.
