Windows error reporting service problems!

I'm kinda at my wits end trying to figure out what the problem is - If I have the WindowsErrorReporting Service turned on in services, I am not able to do any searchs (files, etc) and the control panel will close right after it opens... I am not getting any error messages and looking at the Adminstrative events log I have the following:

Sorry for not being clearer… Search on Start Page, and attempts to open Control Panel will not work if I have WindowsErrorReporting turned on in services. With it turned off there are no problems, leastwise none that I have run into yet…

If I boot in Safe mode w/network, it does not happen – WER works as it should (I assume), Control Panel opens and operates, and search works on the Start page…

On a Clean Boot the problem resurfaces again and I have to turn off WER in Services…

Nothing comes up in “Trouble Shooting” Search and Indexing

SFC /scannow as admin was 1 of the very 1^st^ things I did – SFC didn’t find anything…

The only thing that did replace some files and made changes to the registry is the ReImage program, which I ran as a last resort, and even then the problems still occurs with WER on…

The Win 8 is a fresh install, I had a major crash, I formatted the drive as part of the install, so as far as Windows go, its new and fresh...

OK - I have run sfc 3 times consecutively and the 3rd time it found files and made a cbs.log file of 41,024kb, a zillion pages... From my looking it over I am guessing it is a user account problem, there were a bunch of files it couldn't replace - I'm going to add a new user just to see if my account is a problem...

And as the Bugle's blare in celebration, that is what the problem was! Corrupted user account - The new account I added works as it should! Now at least I'll have some hair left on my head, maybe not, got to see what I have to do to import programs from the other account...

Thank you for your time sir!

    Hi Thomas,

Please provide more information for better understanding of the issue.

    1.      Which search are you referring to? Is it on Windows Explorer or search on Start page?

    2.      Did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

Windows Error Reporting (WER) is a set of Windows technologies that capture software crash and hang data from end users. Windows Error reporting service is completely different service which doesn’t interfere with searching.

Method 1: I would suggest you to check if you face the same issues even in Safe mode with Networking as the computer will start with limited drivers and software which will help in checking if any third party software is causing the issue.

Step 1: Refer the section safe mode with Networking in the link to start the computer in safe mode.

     http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

Note: If you're not signed in to Windows, click the power icon from the sign-in screen, hold Shift, and then click Restart to start the computer in safe mode from login screen**.**Please restart the computer to start in normal mode.

Step 2: If the issue doesn’t occur in safe mode please check in clean boot as it will disable all the third party software and you will be able to recognize which software is causing the issue.

Please refer to the link to start the computer in clean boot.

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Refer the section “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting in clean boot” of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

Method 2: Run search and indexing troubleshooter.

    a.       Press Windows + W key on the keyboard.

    b.      Type troubleshooting in the search tab and press Enter.

    c.       Click View all on left panel**.**

    d.      Click Search and Indexing, new window will popup.

    e.       Follow the on screen instructions.

Method 3: I would request you to run the command prompt as administrator and run the System File Checker command, check if this helps.

    a.       Press Windows key + W, type CMD.

    b.      Click on Command Prompt.

    c.       Type the command: sfc /scannow and press Enter.

    d.      Restart the computer and check.

Note: The System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) scans for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them.

Please get back to us and let us know if this helps in resolving the issue.
