st microelectronics accelerometer - windows 8 dell issues

I own a Dell Studio 1558 and recently purchased windows 8 upgrade.  When trying to upgrade it asks me to delete the ST microelectronics accelerometer and I am concerned that if I do so (if I can actually find it) that this might cause the hard drive to damage itself or fail.  Does anyone have any ideas as to whether it is safe to delete or should I wait for a compatible version.

Thanks

Jamie

I also have this problem...I can't even upgrade after uninstalling the accelerometer...the upgrade package freezes and tells me I need to uninstall STMicroelectronics accelerometer...even though I've already uninstalled and removed all the registry entries I know are associated with it...any help would be greatly appreciated.

**If you uninstall the old version, it will remove "Accelerometer" and "FreeFall Data Protection."

**It is at your own risk, if you want your HDD after you damage this PC. I have uninstalled the old version and it had removed the softwares mentioned above. My PC runs perfectly and also decreased its boot time from 48 secs to 32 secs.

Note- I did a lot of research on this topic and I was brave enough to uninstall. I was afraid if my PC would be permanently damaged, but good results came in front of my eyes!

    Hi

    What do you mean?

Is it like if I install the newer driver from the scratch the accelerometer won't actually do its job??

I'm using win 8 from it's first preview time; and since Oct 2012, I use that newer driver for ST acclromtr.

Till now nothing happened. But my laptop always sits in table, i dont move it here n there, so i donno actually that ST acclromtr is working or not; but in device manager the ST acclromtr is working properly.

First, download Dell STMicroelectronics DE351DL Motion Sensor Driver from here - http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/w/laptop/4232.studio-1558-windows-8-64-bit.aspx

This works with my PC, and OH! I almost forgot your question!

Also note that in Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Other Devices, the driver will be mentioned as Unknown Device. No need to worry! You might find this frustrating, but it will surely decrease your boot time and speed up your PC.

    Good Luck!

EDIT - The link consists of drivers taken from other PC's that have the same hardware configuration of Dell Studio 1558. The drivers work perfectly!

Just one thing to say, Dell is so unfair that it did not launch official drivers for any Studio-Range laptop. The hardware requirements of Windows 8 exactly match with those of Dell Studio 1558, except for the outdated drivers!

No update available (for any driver) on Dell Studio 1558.

Is there a place where we can find compatble drivers?

    Regards.

    Hi Jamie,

more than likely what is needed are updated drivers for that device. I would check with Dell to see if there are updated drivers specifically for Windows 8.
