2011-02-04T13:03:33+00:00 Do you mean you see a message like this:
AAM Updates Notifier.exe - Unable To Locate Component
This application has failed to start because MSVCRT40.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
If you click OK a couple times, things then appear to be okay but the message is annoying.
You will see this in the Event Viewer System log:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: Application Popup
Event Category: None
Event ID: 26
Description:
Application popup: AAM Updates Notifier.exe - Unable To Locate Component : This application has failed to start because MSVCRT40.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
Maybe someday the XP forums "Ask a question" dialog will ask these questions automatically when a new thread is started so I do not have to ask them every single time. It might even be possible to resolve an issue in a single reply when enough information is provided.
Please provide additional information about your system:
What is your system make and model?
What is your XP Version and Service Pack?
Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc.
If the system used to work properly, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did work properly?
Do, or do not. There is no try.

2011-08-18T15:37:38+00:00 That will not work - I recreated the problem, applied your "instant solution" and it fails.
Let's see what the exert Microsoft Support Engineers have to say.
That will be nothing.

Why don't you first recreate the problem on your system?
After you recreate the problem, run the system file checker to scan your computer and see if it helps.
You will find that running the system file checker does not help and it is a waste of time.
Since the system file checker is likely going to ask for an XP installation CD (which most people do not have) the system file checker will probably not run in the first place so now it is a frustrating waste of time. Even it you were able to come up with an XP installation CD and get the system file checker to run successfully is still will not help.
If you need help understanding what the system file checker really does, how it works, what it does and what it does not do and why it will not help, I will be happy to explain it, then you can test it yourself and learn how it really works when you get done.
Do, or do not. There is no try.

2011-02-04T11:39:24+00:00 Hi bamase,
·What is the complete error message you are receiving?
·Do you remember any recent changes made on your computer prior to the issue?
·What is the service pack installed on your computer?
·Do you have any security software installed on your computer?
I would suggest you to run system file checker scan on your computer to resolve issues with missing or corrupt system files. Refer the below link for steps: Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe):http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310747
