DirectSound not working - How to get direct sound driver>

My sound mysteriously quit working.

Have learned that a third party download may have caused a driver problem.

Not a serious techie, I don't mess with registry things w/o qualified advice/direction.

How can I get driver and get it running?

What is the exact make and model of your PC or sound card?

Also, go to the Start Menu, you will see a Run entry. Click it, then type in the box devmgmt.msc and press enter. A Device Manager window will open up. Click the plus sign next to Sound, video and game controllers and any yellow question mark. While the windows is in focus or otherwise the top most window hold down the alt key and press the print screen key. The key is usually located on the right side top row.

Open Paint from Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Paint and click edit and then paste. Click file, save as. On the left location bar, click desktop. In the save as type click the down arrow and save as a JPEG or PNG. The image of the Device Manager is now on your desktop. Attach it to your next reply by clicking .

Yes, go ahead and uninstall it. Reboot and it should automatically reinstall. Then check device manager again.

    It worked!

I did the uninstall and restart and Realtek began working. It plays from a CD, but there are other problems that are interfering with WinAmp Player and other files programs, etc., that have previously worked.

The more recent problem/failure, no sound at all, players not working, disk burning, began with a third party thing that can't even remember installing. I believe I have cleared all or nearly all out of them that I could identify out of this machine. But in my search for 'DirectSound' driver and got involved with 'Free drivers', etc., I got a whole lot of things, EXCEPT an appropriate driver. I VERY seldom accept anything that requires agreeing to also accepting a toolbar, using someones search engine, sharing info., or any other kind of participation stuff. But in desperation to get 'out of trouble' I only got into more!

I thank you very much for your advice and the truly effective remedy you advised to undo my booboo!

I will certainly send kudos on the board.

    Rich

Thank you very kindly for your response!!

My fine old desktop machine is an emachine D5039, with an extra internal HD and a good deal  of outboard storage for my 4000 music and Karaoke files.

The failing element is shown to be the DirectSound driver.Gateway manufactured the eMachine, and I could not install either of the drivers they provided (I did download and save the RealTek drivers they provided). I have peeked, and the device manager shows something different.

The troubleshooter appears to have pointed me to the problem and provided a solution path, uninstalling and reinstalling it.

If you believe this is the thing to do I will surely follow your recommendation and do it.

The yellow exclamation point indicated the probable problem and the path to correct it.

    Thank you again!!

    Rich
