Anybody know the Registry change to Enable IE Option Lan Settings (they are all grayed out)?

I just installed an update to Windows Vista (latest security patch) and I now cannot access the internet.  I have two machines fortunately.  The other is a Windows 7 machine that I am typing this question on.  I believe my problem is in the Internet Options ->Connections->Lan Settings->(window), you have the option to set up an automatic configuration or use a proxy server.  All options are greyed out and I cannot change the selected proxy server.  For my LAN settings need to be set to Automatically detect settings.  The Proxy server option box is greyed out but checked, however their is no address or port assigned.  Does anyone know the registry entry or any other way to correct this?  I have drilled down the registry but as you can imagine, for someone who does not do this kind of work regurlarly nothing really poped out at me.  I may have to add a registry entry but I do not know where to begin.  Any help would be great.

Check and/or change these two settings:

    1. Internet Options > Connections Tab > ‘Never dial’, etc. should be grayed out. LAN settings at the bottom, should have no entries.

    1. Internet Options > Connections Tab > LAN Settings (at the bottom). If the ‘Proxy server’ checkbox is checked, then uncheck it > OK, etc. Note that this can be caused by malware. This may well be your problem so make sure your machine is clean.

This seems simple, however I found the problem about one hour ago.  Please note what I found.

Several REG_DWords were found in the registry, how they got there I have no idea.

    under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>POLICIES>INTERNET EXPLORER>CONTROL PANEL

there were AutoConfig Reg_DWord 1, and Proxy REG_DWord 1.  If these are set to 1 they grey out both options and the user whether an administrator or not cannot change them.  This prevent a novice user from messing up the selections.  I deleted both of these reg_dwords and the options were then selectable/changeable.

There is a Proxy key (plus others here) that could have been changed, http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/537/

    hi,,

similar problem here,, i apparently downloaded the fake Firefox a few days ago,, i've since uninstalled and reinstalled it,, as well as repaired the proxy settings that were messed up in Firefox and Avast so i am at least able to get online,,

(i have also scanned and cleaned my pc for spyware, malware, virus, fixed reg errors, etc)

however no matter what i have tried,, the internet proxy settings in ie 8 are grayed out and i can not do anything,, (i even reinstalled ie8 and no difference)

ie is totally useless with the proxy server setting out of wack

i have gone thru the registery with the above directions and not able to locate those keys.

i'm on verizon fios, and use XP pro.

    help please?

    thanks

I’m glad you sorted it out.

As you didn’t create those keys, I suspect it is/was an infection that caused it. Have you run your ‘anti’ programs yet?
