Software and drivers for HP Photosmart c4580 in Windows 8.1 Pro 32 bit

I have recently upgraded from Windows 8.0 Pro to 8.1 Pro.  Since then, I have been unable to connect with my HP c4580 (over wireless network) nor have I been able to update the drivers and software to try and reconnect.  Although not technically trained, I am far from a luddite in this respect, and I have tried many solutions to resolve this including using your compatibility checker and I have even uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee anti-virus (as the upgrade seemed to stop that from working too).  This has now been going on for about a week and is causing me considerable stress and headaches as I run my own business from home and I need my printer and scanner. I have been onto the HP web-site and have downloaded their drivers for Windows 8.1 Pro 32 bit (PS_AIO_04_C4500_USW_Full_Win_WW_140_408), which I have sitting on my desktop, but every time I run it it, it extracts the program but then it just does not run.  When I check Task Manager I can see that it is trying to, and is using up a considerable amount of my CPU's processing to make it run, but still it wont run and install.  I need this resolved quickly.

    Hi Richard --

    Can you clarify a few details regarding the issue you are seeing?

    • Is the printer still installed (that is, does it show up in the devices list when you try to print)?
    • Can you run the script below and respond with the output:
      • Right click Start, Run, type "cmd" to bring up a command console.
    • - Type "PowerShell" (and hit enter)
    • - Type "get-printer | format-list" (and hit enter)
      • Type "get-printerdriver | format-list" (and hit enter)
      • Copy and Paste the screen output of the above commands to your reply (right click on the command window's Title Bar and go to Edit->Mark and you can select the text, then right click on the Title Bar again and go to Edit->Copy to copy it)

    Right I rebooted, carried out your instructions full of optimism... and... exactly the same.  Extracts, the circle whirrs, and nothing.  Let me know what to try next as I need to get to the bottom of this, and quickly.

    Thanks.  Based on the logs, it looks like the printer has been removed, but something on the system is still using it so it hasn't yet been completely uninstalled.  Can you try the following:

    • Make sure there are no copies of the HP driver installer (the one you downloaded) are running -- use Task Manager to check, and terminate any installer processes if there are any.
    • Right click Start, go to "Command Prompt (Admin)"
    • type "net stop spooler" (and hit enter)
    • type "net start spooler" (and hit enter)

    At this point the spooler should be restarted; now do the following (from the command prompt opened previously)

    • type "PowerShell" (to start a powershell session)
    • type "remove-printer "HP Photosmart C4500 series"
    • type "remove-printerdriver "HP Photosmart C4500 series"

    (It is possible that the "remove-printer" command may fail, this is OK.)

    At this point, try running the HP Driver installation program you downloaded previously.

    Yes I have uninstalled the printer, I was advised to do this by HP.
