Windows has tried to update three times and each time I have been forced to restore from a backup.  After the update completes and I reboot I get a message box titled RunDll that says "there was a problem starting streamci.  The specified modlule could not be found."  The system halts at this point.

There was no yellow exclamation point next to my audio driver but I deleted it and installed a new one since Windows told me I was using the latest driver.  I have seen a red "x" on my speaker icon but only occasionally and the sound worked most of the time.  I'm running a backup now and intend to wait until tomorrow to try an update again.

    Hi Bob,

Streamci.dll is used in the default Windows audio driver which is installed on your computer to handle the sound & audio on your system. It is one of the most commonly used .dll (dynamic link library) files on Windows, which leads it to post a series of errors if it ever becomes damaged or corrupted.

Since this file is used by Windows to control the use and installation of audio drivers, it would be logical to attempt to repair of any these files first. You can do this by following these steps:

    For Windows 7

    1. Click “Start” > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound
    2. Under “Devices and Printers” heading, click Device Manager
    3. In the Window that opens, look for the speaker icon next to “Sound, video and game controllers”
    4. Expand this option then right click on the erroneous hardware (should have a yellow exclamation mark next to it)
    5. Click properties and go to “Driver“. Now click “Update Driver” and follow the on screen wizard

    Have a Nice day!

    Hi Bob,

Perform SFC(System File Checker) scan and see if the issue occurs.

**Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7**

Please reply if you have any questions.

    Hi Jessen,

I ran it, scf reported it found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.  It referred me to \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log which is a 5megabyte file.  I was not able to understand what the file said.

This problem started with a MS update and reoccurs whenever I try do do the update.  I suspect something got corrupted in the process and persists on my HD.  I wonder if I could eliminate the files for the update and start over?

I would send you the log file but I don't know how.
