error 0x0000185

After starting my computer up it began an update. After that I had a quick error message reading something about KERNEL. I tried to get a pen to write it down, but it was gone when I came back.

When I started the computer up again, it went to a blue screen and said there was an error with CI.dll (parts corrupt or missing, I think) and error 0x0000185.

It also gave me 3 options:

Enter to try again

F8 to enter set-up

Esc for UEFI Firmware.

Now it only comes up with the 0x0000185 error and the 3 options above.

I can't get past this, except into UEFI Firmware (non of the F8 options work, including the safe mode options, they just go back to the blue screen error message).

My computer is an Acer E1-571 Aspire, which came with windows installed, and I don't have a boot up disk.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong and how to fix it?

I also occasionally get the message instead of the one posted above at the start up:

    Recovery

Your PC needs to be repaired

A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed

    Error code: 0x0000185

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any istallation media (like a disk or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Hi, I also had this exact problem. I'll try to put in use the advice  you gave, however I wanted to know the chances of my files been deleted (I can't possibly describe how concerned I am about this)

    Sorry to keep posting.

I've also heard that CI.dll is malware or something, and been advised to use TDSSKILLER.

Is there any information on what CI.dll actually is, and what the error code 0x0000185 means?

Again, sorry to keep asking questions.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

    Iain

Also, I don't know if this is of any use:

When I boot up n Legacy mode without the USB it goes to a black start-up screen, which says the following:

    Broadcom UNDI PXE-2.1 v15.0.11

    Copyright (C) 2000-2011 Broadcom corporation

    Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

    All rights reserved.

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

    PEX-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

    Hi Iain,

I see that this is your first post in this forum, welcome to the Microsoft Community forum.

Just a few questions first, to understand the issue better:

    1)      What is the full error message that you get?

    2)      Do you remember the KB number or any information about the update that was installed?

From what you have described, it appears that the issue is caused due to a conflict with the update that was installed recently. Since you are unable to boot to the desktop now, I would suggest you to perform an automatic repair and check. The Automatic repair can detect and fix the issues that prevent the computer from starting normally. You will need the Windows 8 installation disc to perform an Automatic repair. If you don’t have a Windows 8 disc, I would suggest you to download the Windows 8 installation files from another computer through this link and choose to create an installation media when the upgrade assistant prompts.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

After you have a Windows 8 installation disc, follow these steps:

    a)      When your computer starts, wait for the manufacturer logo to check the option for boot menu, it will usually be F12.

    b)      The boot menu key might differ with each manufacturer. If you are unable to find the boot menu key, you may refer the user manual.

    c)       Restart the computer, when the manufacturer's logo is displayed, keep pressing the Boot menu option key to enter the boot menu and change the boot option to CD\DVD ROM.

    d)      After you boot your computer using Windows DVD or System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD". Press any key.

    e)      Select the correct time and Keyboard type.

    f)       Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner

    g)      Click on Troubleshooting, advanced option and then click Automatic repair.

Try these steps and let us know the results. We’d be happy to help if you need any further assistance.
