Rest assured you did the right thing. This is most definitely a scam. Microsoft does not preemptively call users, you have to initiate the call.
Just to be safe you should run full virus and malware scans.

This morning I received a phone call from a Person named Patrick Simon....who clearly had an accent perhaps India or middle eastern. He said this company was hired by Microsoft to fix a problem with my computer. I downloaded Windows 8.1 free two days ago and noticed adware or malware? I am in the process of trying to rid it of whatever is causing the problem...? The caller had an urgency in his voice and wanted me to go online with one of his tech support at Microtech to fix it. I told him no and I would have to verify his contract before fixing any files. He provided me a Houston Telephone number in his words of 239-247-5552. I am reporting this call after seeing on this site another person who had a similar scam! Frightened me that he had my phone number. Thanks would appreciate a hoax confirmation...do have something wrong with main computer after downloading upgrade of Windows 8.1 from App Store? GrannieGeek

The call is phony. A friend of mine got that call and her daughter allowed the person into the computer. When they called me, I sent her down to her bank and had her change all of her accts and credit cards. I couldn't find anything on her computer that they left, after having access to ti. They called a few days later and this time the daughter hung up. Contacted the DA to see if they could be of any help etc. Good Luck.
Unrequested phone calls of this nature are almost always a common scam. Do not give them any info, do not give them access to your PC, do not give them any money and do not go to any websites they suggest. Hang up.

Microsoft never makes unasked for support or security phone calls.
These types of callers may use completely fictitious names or bogusly claim to be from genuine companies other than Microsoft as well.
If you suspect you have adware or malware, please ask a separate question in our Virus and Malware forums here on Microsoft Community. Be sure to give full details of what's happening.
Received the same phone call. I asked the same questions.
Its a scam Microsoft its employees or partners will never call users for computer related issues. Microsoft would not spy on you for whatever reason. The best can do is scan the PC for Malware Spyware and viruses as suggested. hope this helps
