Thank You. I just purchased the FULL install DVD and will do the 'clean' install. It will be worth getting to 8.1 and then to 10 when it is released next month.
Thanks

I purchased windows 8 upgrade on 01/14/2013. I upgraded to 8.1 when it became available. Since then some files got corrupted and could not open so I opted to reinstall Windows XP and then upgrade to Windows 8.1 only to find out that I needed to have the dvd to do so. Now I'm stuck with XP and no Windows 8.1.
Is there a way of solving this problem other than having to buy Windows 8.1 anew?

I guess nobody know the true path/answer to upgrade from legendary Windows XP to Windows 8.1. However, I did it but it costed me some $$$$$$$$ and time.
The most important thing: uninstall any incompatible program before upgrade.
Here is the path:
Windows XP upgrades to Windows Vista to Windows 7 then Windows 8.1.
LOL
How do you feel?
Hi Uranus,
If you want to upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows XP, you'll need to purchase the Windows 8.1 product key and its DVD and then perform a clean installation using its installation DVD.
The only option to update to Windows 8.1 for free of cost is by reinstalling and activating Windows 8 on the computer again and then updating it to Windows 8.1 via Windows Store for free of cost.

Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8
Hope this is helpful.
You can upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 8 but you need to be at least on Service Pack 3 first. But the big issue though is that all the technology from Windows XP might not even be compatible with the latest operating system. And to do an install, you'd have to format your PC anyway during the upgrade process. You are better off buying a brand new faster system.
The tenor of the reply seems to suggest that I want a 'free' upgrade, but, a careful reading of my question would suggest otherwise. I purchased the online upgrade, I never wanted asked for a fre upgrade.
