keyboard doesn't work

I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 on my Toshiba Satellite P770 laptop and downloaded the recommended 8.1 drivers from the Toshiba  website. Initially it seemed to go OK but on reboot it stops at the picture/time screen. It will not respond to the integral keyboard, touchpad. I can access utilizing the onscreen keyboard and mouse.  The mouse functions normally.

I have been using  the onscreen keyboard...everthing else in Windows is normal/stable and works great except the keyboard and the touchpad.

The keyboard does not function in safe mode either...it functions in startup/setup (f2/f12) and when I go into advanced options.

In Device Manager, keyboards, (general tab) under status it states: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

The rollback driver button is not highlighted.

Could you please check the registry for the keyboard class as shown in the picture below and tell us what values you have for "UpperFilters" or "LowerFilters" name?

For keyboard (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4d36e96b-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318})  it's normal to have "UpperFilters" as "kbdclass" and for mouse, "UpperFilters" as "mouclass". If you see any additional strings for "UpperFilters", please remove that and reboot your system.

If there is any LowerFilters for either keyboard or mouse, please remove the registry name completely.

Glad to know your keyboard is working now. Code 19 has become a common issue with Windows upgrade. Main reason is that customers install all kinds of software (virus checker, anti-spyware, remoting devices, firmware updater, etc) on their systems, and these software end up installing class filters on various device stacks (typically keyboard, mouse, disk, USB) in a way that system cannot figure out how to migrate them cleanly. As a result, some registry entries get migrated and some don't. Sometimes all the registry entries get migrated but the sys file is not copied to the right place.

Now in your case, the SynTP is a valid filter. This is provided by synoptics to enhance your keyboard/touchpad experience. I don't know much about CeKbFilter.sys. Bing query says that it is a  Toshiba Flash Cards Support Driver from Compal Electronics. My guess is one of them didn't get migrated correctly.

So my suggestion would be to add SynTP back to the registry (in the same order that you saw eariler) and see if that works. If it doesn't then remove and go to Toshiba's site and install the latest keyboard driver package again. If you are happy with the keyboard experience you have right now with the inbox drivers then don't bother.

For keyboard (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4d36e96b-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318})  ,If you see any additional strings for "UpperFilters", please remove that and reboot your system.

My upper filters under data has "CeKbFilter SynTP kbdclass"

Should I delete this upper filter.

**For HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4d36e96f-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}**My upper filters under data just has "mouclass" That looks ok.

I removed the "CeKbFiter Syn TP" and kept the kbdclass string...I rebooted and the keyboard now works perfectly.

Thank you for your help on this matter... it is greatly appreciated.

    Yes it's due to SynTP.

Thank you for your support...I will try to add the Syn TP to the registry as you suggest.

I forgot to mention that my touch pad does not work....I could live without it but I would like to get it working. Could that be the Syn TP I removed?

    Thanks for your help.
