Original title: Programs Compatibility Application Applications App Apps Game Games Legacy Crash Crashes Hang Hangs

I am experiencing problems while playing the game; Empire:Total War. I have played this game, going through the easy and medium setting,  off and on for about 18 months without any problems. Approx. two months ago I started the hard setting and it was going fine for the first several sessions. All of the sudden about 5-10 minutes into the game the screen would black out and a message would appear saying ' Empire: Total War has stopped working.   A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."  Needless to say no message has come from windows so I am at a loss as to what the problem is. On advise of a semi-computer "expert" I uninstalled Steam and Empire both. I then reinstalled them and the problem still exists.   When I checked the Steam trouble shooter it said that running Steam in Windows compatibility mode is not recommended and that I should remove any windows compatibility settings for all users under file properties for Steam.exe.. I am reluctent to try this as I am a computer dummy and do not want to do more harm to the system. Any ideas?

    Hello Charles,

Thank you for approaching Microsoft Community. I understand that Empire:Total War game crashes randomly. I would definitely help you in fixing this issue.

    Perform the following troubleshooting methods:

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to place the computer in clean boot state and then try to play the game.

You can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

To set the computer in clean boot, follow the steps from the link: How to perform a clean boot

Note: After checking in clean boot, follow step: 3 from the article to reset the computer to normal boot.

    Method 2:

Install the latest graphics card driver and then check how to game works.

Refer to these links to know how to update the drivers.

Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly

Update drivers for Windows 7: recommended

I would suggest you to check Event Logs for more information regarding the issue.

Refer to the link “What information appears in event logs (Event Viewer)?” to know how to check Event Viewer.

I hope this helps you to fix the issue. If the issue continues, please do reply with Event Logs. We would be happy to help you further.

I've been experiencing the exact same problem when playing both Civilization V and Supreme Ruler: Cold War--both on Steam.  I had also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the games (and Steam) to no avail.  I've tried all of the troubleshooting steps you've listed here including trying to play with the computer in a clean boot state and updating to the latest graphics card driver (mine was current), but I'm still experiencing the same crash.

I've analyzed the Event Log and identified the entries associated with the crashes.  They do not make much sense to me, but I've included the details here.  Would you be able to determine the problem from the even details?

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Jeffrey Anderson
