Internet Connectivity Issues Primary DNS - Strange issue

I have a desktop running on Windows 7. Not sure if it is related but I downloaded and installed Office 13 (I already had Office 10). Shortly after I had internet connection problems. It says there is a issues connecting to the primary DNS server. Tried the previous suggested resolutions surround renewed the dns and didn't work. However it seemed at the time randomly the internet worked for a while then stopped. Got my ISP out twice and replaced the modem. Second time they tested another laptop connected by same cable to the modem and that worked, indicating an issue with the desktop computer.

I took it in to a local place here in Singapore and they said they fixed it and it was a browser issue. Also said lots of things running and recommended a full reinstall of Windows 7. I agreed but wasn;t sure it would fix and when I got it home it didn't, same issue. The internet connects but then if I leave it for a whiel or restart it stops working with the Primary DNS issue. The only way I can get it working is to remove the LAN cable from the desktop and plug it into my laptop (Windows XP). Then when I have confirmed internet, disconnect reconnect with the desktop, reset the modem then I get internet.

The ipconfig looks very similar when it is not working and when it is

This is when I have connectivity:

Here are a few things to try.

    • If Apples Bonjour service is present disable it.
    • In an elevated command prompt run

    netsh int ipv4 reset

    And

    netsh winsock reset

Also, disable power management on the NIC.

Do you have the latest network drivers?

What security program do you use?  Any 3rd party firewall?

    Ratandeep

    Thanks for your reply

    1. I installed office 13 just before the issue happened. After the issue I have re installed windows
    2. Error message is "your computer appears to be correctly configured but the device or resource (primary DNS server) is not responding.

I tried step 1 and 2 but the settings were already as suggested.

    Any other ideas?

    Cheers

    Andy

    Hi Andy,

    1. Have you made any changes to your computer?
    2. What is the complete error message?

I suggest you to please use following steps:

    Step 1.

    1. Connect to your router (by typing 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar) and log in. Check your user manual or documentation if you do not know the log-in credentials.
    2. Make sure you are in the Setup -> Basic Setup category.
    3. Scroll down until you see 'DHCP Server' - if it is disabled, select 'Enable'.
    4. Enable DHCP If you want, you can change the number that the DHCP IP assigning starts. (this is optional)
    5. Use the DNS servers provided to you by your ISP. There are many DNS servers out there. It's best to use your ISP's if possible.
    6. Scroll down and click 'Save Settings'.

    Step 2.

    1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
    2. Go to Networking and sharing center and then click on Change adapter settings.
    3. Right click on Local Area Connection and choose properties.
    4. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 6 and click on Properties.
    5. Choose Obtain DNS server address automatically and press Ok.
    6. Choose Obtain IP address automatically.
    7. Repeat the steps for Internet Protocol version 4 as well.

    Hope it helps.

    Thanks
