windows 8.1 install taking long time

First, I'm a complete computer ignoramus. Just got a new Windows 8 computer, was told 8.1 was more like Windows 7. Started installing 8.1 from Windows store site about 4 hours ago, the page still says "installing 29 updates. Should it take so long? Any way to get to a progress bar or something that shows the status of the update? What if I finally just shut down my computer out of pure frustration?

    Installation was finally successful but took six hours. Perhaps I have the world's slowest internet service. Thank you very much.

    Hi Lynn,

    As the installation already started, I would suggest you to wait until the installation gets completed. If the installation gets stopped or if you want to perform installation again, then I would suggest   you to perform clean boot and then try to upgrade to Windows 8.1. Also make sure you disconnect all the external devices except mouse and keyboard.
