Windows 8.1 freezes during resume from hibernate

I have an elderly laptop that has a new lease of life following an upgrade to Windows 8 and a new SSD.

When it had Windows 8 it would hibernate and resume quickly and without any issues.

Now I have applied the Windows 8.1 update it will no longer resume from hibernate. It begins to resume and then freezes. The animation stops and so does all disk activity.

Powering off and back on again to perform a full restart gets back in to windows.

There is no BSOD or errors in the windows event log. It has simply frozen.

All drivers are as up-to-date as they can be.

I've searched for answers on the internet. There are others with similar issues but no satisfactory solution. One poster mentions a hotfix but I have been unable to find any on the microsoft site.

    Hi,

    ·         What is the make and model of the computer?

This issue occurs because a request that is sent from the Cdrom.sys file is kept in a suspended state. Furthermore, the issue is caused by a CD-ROM call does not have a time-out setting.

Method 1: follow the suggestion from this Microsoft KB article and check if it helps. (Also applicable for Windows 8.1)

Windows 8-based computer freezes when you resume the computer from hibernate mode

Method 2: Run the power troubleshooter. Follow these steps:

    a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.

    b) Type Troubleshooter in the search box and then press enter.

    c) Click system and security and run the power troubleshooter.

Method 3: Try to reset the power options by executing the following command from an elevated command prompt.

    a) Press Windows key + X, click on Command prompt (Admin),

    b) Copy and paste (or type) the following command “cmd powercfg.exe –restoredefaultschemes”

    in the Open box

    c) Then press ENTER:

You can also try changing the power plan. Change the “Power plans” settings. A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings (like display, sleep, etc.) that manages how your PC uses power. The power plans you can use depend on the kind of PC you have.

Thanks, but different problem.  This is a hang up at the black screen before the login screen.  It just refuses to come out of hibernation without a cold boot, so you lose everything that you had open and were working on when it went into hibernation.  Basically, hibernation just doesn't work anymore, and I really need it to. But I'm glad you found a solution for your problem:)

    Hello all,

I updated my PC to a Win 8.1 OS.  Now, I also have the hibernation problem reported above.  I have tried all of the methods suggested above, including the MS Hotfix without success. I do need the hibernation feature.

I tried the hotfix available on the MS side and it won't even install on Windows 8.1 (464480_intl_x64_zip.exe).  I do not have any external DVDs connected via USB ports. I do have 2 internal DVD drives that worked just fine before.

    Did anyone resolve the issue?

Would you recommend I try the hotfix anyway?

I tried the hotfix and as suspected it won't install on Windows 8.1

The power troubleshooter comes up empty.

The laptop is an HP Pavilion dv5 1113us.

Everything was fine in Windows 8. It is the upgrade to Windows 8.1 that has killed the hibernate function for me.

Thank you for your answer John. I had found that hotfix but I don't use an external USB optical drive. Also I have Windows 8.1 rather than 8 - and I didn't have the issue with 8.

Would you recommend I try the hotfix anyway?
