Windows 8.1 update conflict with SteelSeries devices

Hi all,

The new SteelSeries Engine 2 driver (with support for Windows 8.1) is not working for me or is something wrong in Windows 8.1.

SteelSeries product I have:

  • SteelSeries Apex Gaming Keyboard;
  • SteelSeries Mouse Sensei [RAW];
  • SteelSeries Diablo 3 Headset.

Computer configuration: Intel I7 4770k, 16 Gb RAM, NVidia GTX 780, Kingston SSDNow V300 120 Gb

What I did:

  • fresh install windows 8;
  • update to Windows 8.1;
  • update matherboard drivers from manufacturer website via AppCenter;
  • update NVidia driver to latest;
  • installed SteelSeries Engine 2 driver: 2.8.0171 (with support for Windows 8.1);

Problems:

  • keyboard ligths are turning on and off all the time (sometimes 2-3 times/ minute) for about 1-2 seconds. During lights are off, I don't have any control of the keyboard (functions are freezed);
  • mouse lights are turning on and off all the time. Similar problem as the keyboard: mouse pointer is freee and I can't use it for 1-2 secs;
  • Diablo 3 Headset loose the sound and microphone but on a lower rate: once every few minutes, but takes up to few minutes to have the sound back;
  • every time keyboard, mouse or headset is back, I have a pop-up window from SteelSeries Engine 2 icon from taskbar that "xxx device is connected". Looks like all my 3 devices are getting disconected from USB all the time and then re-connect again.

What I tried:

  • I try connecting all 3 devices on USB 2.0 and USB 3.0: same problems;
  • I uninstalled SteesSeries Engine 2 driver: same problems (I had same problems even before installing SteelSeries Engine 2 driver);

My conclusion: since all 3 devices are presenting the same problems and I try with and without SteelSeries Engine 2 driver and is no difference, my conclusion is that USB port are not working correct.

(I didn't test other USB devices to see if the problem of USB is only for SteelSeries products or is for any device connect via USB port)

If somone have some good suggestions how to fix this problems I have, please free to post them.

Thank you,

Doru

    Hi Eliyas,

    Thank you for correcting me.

    Doru, as you have mentioned that you have not tested by connecting other USB devices, please check and let us know if it is indeed the problem with USB ports or only with SteelSeries devices.

    If you are facing this issue with all the USB devices, then reinstall the USB controllers.

    Follow these steps:

    a)      Press windowsand R keys from the keyboard.

    b)      Type devmgmt.msc and then press enter.

    c)      Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

    d)      Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.

    e)      Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.

    If the issue is only with SteelSeries devices, then I would suggest you to contact SteelSeries support.

    Thank you

    Thank you for replies, but this don't help me.

    Was impossible for me to work on the computer with all these errors and I look on the internet to find solutions, but with no result.

    I tried to power up all the time all my USB ports and this improve a bit, but didn't solve the problem.

    I uninstall the USB ports and restart to let windows install them again, but again didn't helped.

    I decide to write here, because in the first run I just update from 8.0 to 8.1 and I have all these errors, but after that I did a clean install of Windows 8.0 from CD and then update again to 8.1, without doing anything more on the computer.... the rest is in my first post.

    Right now, when I'm writing, I just did my 3rd re-install of Windows and I will stay on 8.0. At least this version didn't mess up the USB ports and is working really good.

    I will keep looking for solutions or to see if more peoples have this type of issue.

    Thank you,

    Doru

    The issue described in the article was fixed with an update released by Microsoft on Nov 11. Information in the article as to where the bug (whether in MS stack or steelseries driver) was also incorrect. Nevertheless the issue has been fixed.

    The problem described by Doru here appears to be different.
