No Sound over HDMI after powering off TV then powering back on

I have a new PC running Windows 8.1. I use an intel i3 4130 and an Asrock H81M motherboard. I have the latest Intel Audio and Video drivers. Everything is fine when I turn the PC on and the TV is already on. When the TV is powered off, then powered back on again, the Intel audio driver is disabled. Since the Intel Audio driver is the only sound driver installed, the entire Sound Devices category in Device Manager is gone, and I no longer have any audio via HDMI. I have confirmed that this occurs only on TV power on by having everything working ok, then remoting in to the pc via remote desktop connection and viewing device manager and verifying all devices are still ok, then turning TV off and still showing all devices are ok, and finally powering TV back on and the Intel Audio device disappears, all while on Remote Desktop Connection. I can video document this if it helps having my (and countless others') problems addressed.

I did not have this problem with the PC that the new one replaced, which was a Dell Zino HD with the optional ATI Radeon HD 4330, running Windows 7. Same TV, same HDMI cable. I do not know whether it is an Intel issue or a Windows 8.1 issue, or perhaps a HDMI-CEC issue. I have documented my problems over on the Intel forums at https://communities.intel.com/thread/41853 and https://communities.intel.com/message/211465 and https://communities.intel.com/thread/46092 in case it is an intel issue, and am cross documenting here in case it is a Windows 8.1 issue. All I know is that everything worked fine, and I could turn on and off my TV to my heart's content without losing audio with my old PC.

Everything works ok on boot. I don't want to have to restart my pc every single time I turn off the tv.

I had the same problem after I upgraded to Windows 8.1. The only way I could get sound from the HDMI connection was to plug in the cable and reboot. My solution came when I found that Intel just released a driver supporting 3rd and 4th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® HD/Iris™ Graphics for Microsoft* Windows 8.1. I downloaded and installed the 64-bit version. Now when I plug in the HDMI cable, the sound automatically switches over to the HDMI and when I unplug, it switches back. The driver is here:   https://communities.intel.com/thread/45727

You may have not seen where I stated everything was fine if the tv was on prior to powering up the pc. This includes sound. Let me make that a little more clear. Sound works fine and cables are inserted correctly on system startup. All drivers are installed and running correctly. When the tv is powered off then powered on again, the audio driver is disabled by the system automatically. The only change the system is the power cycling of the television. I do not care for your workarounds, I want my actual issue resolved.

I have this issue with Windows 8 (without upgrade) and I have ATI, other people have geforce and they to have this error... I think that there is wrong order of re-initializing devices of video and audio over HDMI. Could you try changing video resolution

    • the sound should be back, then change the resolution back to what you were using normally.

All driver issues should go to the hardware manufacturer for resolution.  You posting in their forums is a good start, you may want to contact them directly.

    Hi,

Make sure that there is volume on the TV. HDMI cables do support audio signals, but not all HDMI-enabled video cards support audio. If your HDTV has an audio input, you might be able to connect a separate audio cable from your computer's sound card directly to the TV. Otherwise, you'll need to connect the audio signal to a different output device, such as external computer speakers or your home stereo system.

You can also make sure that the connections are appropriate. Try connecting to a different HDMI port as well.

Refer the section: 'Check if the cables are connected properly' and also set the HDMI audio device as the default.
