    1. open task manager and find "update.exe" under the process tab.
    2. right click on it and select "open file location"
    3. delete this folder , in my case folder was "start" ; if "update.exe" is also there then delete it too.

My first instinct is to say: terrible advice here! But perhaps the problem can be caused by those conditions.

Speaking as an amateur, what I think needs to be added to this very old thread is the fact that "update.exe" is also/can also be the rotinom worm which has caused havoc and doesn't seem to be picked up by many antiviruses. Neither Microsoft safety scanner nor security essentials, nor the commercial (pay) software I use can remove the virus without losing data on usb devices. I would love to hear some support from ANY of the software manufacturers we place our trust in. Please provide a solution that does not involve following the instructions for registry editing on some anonymous third party forum!

My blackberry smartphone doesn't work properly with my PC. It bring up the update.exe error.

It also deleted the clears all the files in my blackberry device in such a way that it can only be viewed on my PC and not in my smartphone. Which makes me to constantly format my phone whenever this happens.

I went thru all your procedure here.... I found out the Update.exe is running on my PC's task manager, so I just wanted to seek for further assistance to help remove this terrible virus.

    Thanks

On a more critical note, If your MP4 device works on another computer, then you most likely have the update.exe virus. Run task manager and see if Update.exe is running. If it is, report back and lets guide you through. All the best.

    Hi Dapreid,

This issue occurs when all the following conditions are true:

    • You have a removable drive configured as drive letter C.

    • You do not have a removable disk in the removable disk drive.

To resolve the issue, use one of the following methods:

Change the drive letter assignment for the removable drive to a letter other than C.

To change the drive letter assignments in Windows 7, follow these steps:

    1. Log on to the computer as Administrator.

    2. Insert a disk in the removable drive.

    3. Click Start, right-click on  Computer, and then click Manage.

    4. Click  Disk Management.

    5. Right-click the partition, logical drive, or volume that you want to change, and then clickChange Drive Letter and Paths.

    6. Click the removable drive, click it, click  Change, click the drive letter that you want to use, and then click OK.
