I know these posts are a little old but I have been battling with my small 40 gb ext drive getting nowhere with my new PC and yet it would work perfectly on my lap top XP syst.

But recently a mate of mind brought a similar drive to get my photos of an outing we did together.

I had the same problem with his drive on my PC.

He saw I had it plugged on a cable in turned plugged into my 4 usb ports. and told me to try it directly on the pc usb port.... It worked! And so did mine later on!

So after reading all these posts and all these well thinking help but none of them mentioned the fact long cables and indirect connections can be enough to prevent your ext. HD to be recognised.

USB hubs are so practical no need anymore to crawl to access the pc ports, but in this case they were the problem!

We need to know more information:

    • Which Windows did you upgrade from?
    • Did you install Iomega drivers into your previous Windows?
    • How do you connect your Iomega external HDD to your PC?  Is this an eSATA, USB 3.0, USB 2.0 or FireWire type connection?
    • What type of external HDD is your Iomega?

    You have 2 problems:

    1)  Your IOMega is not recognized by Win7.  See if your IOMega shows up under "Disk Management".  If so, try to mount it.

    2)  If you are using IOMega security encryption, try to load that part of the IOMega program after you get Win7 to recognize the drive.

If you cannot do the above or find Vista or Win7 IOMega drivers, you will need to find an XP system, perhaps your old one, and transfer all the data to another HDD.  You will probably need to use an old PATA HDD.  After you do this, you can either use a PATA to SATA adapter or a PATA to USB 2.0 external enclosure to transfer all the data to your new system.

A better way would be to buy an inexpensive $27 32 GB USB 2.0 Thumb drive to transfer all the data from your old XP system to your new system.  Transcend JetFlash 600 - 32 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drives, TS32GJF600, are the fastest you can buy.  An advantage to this method is you will have a fast thumb drive.  Not being able to use your IOMega on your new system is not really a big loss since it's only 40 GB anyway.

Because your IOMega is encrypted, I cannot see any other way to access the drive.

I upgraded from WindowsXP  on a 40gb Hdd  to a new 80HDD hard drive Windows7.  My Iomega external HDD is connected thru USB, With security encryption.  The software and drivers on the Iomega drive do not auto install like it did on the Windows XP system.  And without another windows xp system i can't access the Iomega drive  at all.
