Would it be possible to plug two keyboards, two mice, and two monitors into one computer and have two people using that computer simultaneously and have them work independently using XP?

I am a Income Tax practitioner. I have a small office and want to connect two or more keyboards mice, and monitors into one computer simultaneously and have them work independently. If it is possible please tell me the detail procedure and the hardware/software required to run such a setup in XP (SP3).

After reading through this thread I decided to just try it.  My dad wanted to connect his computer to his TV.  The TV is in a different room than the computer, but close enough for a wireless mouse and keyboard to work.  He is currently running XP but will soon be upgrading to 7.  He has a wired ergo keyboard and a wireless Logitech mouse.  I plugged in the Logitech wireless combo and both keyboards and mice work.  Sorry Kosh, but all your certifications did you nothing to help answer this question.

    Hi Thomas,

But are you simultaneously using different user profiles and completely independent?

If one of you chose to click on shutdown, are you saying that person could do it and the computer would continue to operate normally for the other person?  If not (or anything else whatsoever done by one could affect the other), then the two people are NOT simultaneously independent

And sorry, but they helped just fine (thank you for noticing them) providing the correct answer for what was asked as opposed to the sharing I/O device procedure you've described - an entirely different situation which can easily be done (assuming proper setup, devices, and specs) and frequently occurs with various types of multiple-device sharing.

Many people with laptops including touchpads prefer to use mice and the computer will handle both just fine - and given enough hardware inputs/drivers & proper configuration, possibly also a digitizer and a numeric keyboard and a joystick and maybe even a trackball.  And besides an ergonomic keyboard along with the laptop keyboard, they may even want to use the http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-xp/help/on-screen-keyboard - or jump around depending on the application or personal preference (all possible if the computer can handle them and is configured on which can be used concurrently or shortcuts to choose which to use concurrently - most computers that originally came with XP or earlier might have trouble handling all these or some combinations without conflicts which may range from possible to impossible to resolve depending on their specs).  These may be used in combination with multiple monitors or projectors or televisions (same compatibility assumptions as noted above) - another type of sharing and, in essence, sharing with sharing.

But that wasn't the question here.

Try simultaneously operating completely independent, where neither person using the computer can affect the other in any way, and we'll see how long it takes for you to accept that nobody can do it.

    Kosh

P.S.  And even if you were to accomplish an inexplicable miracle (which you can't - but just to cover that impossibility), you'd still be in violation of the XP EULAas noted above by Richard and couldn't legally do it.

    P.P.S.  See http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/endofsupport.aspx.
