    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Follow these steps and check if this helps.

    -          Insert a blank recordable DVD into the DVD drive. When you insert a blank DVD into the drive, Windows automatically prompts you with some options.

    -          Select "Burn files to disc”. Another dialogue box appears with the two types of format options.

    -          Type a name for the DVD disk in the section labelled "Burn a disc”. Use a friendly name for the DVD. This is the label for the drive that will show when you insert it into the computer.

    -          Click the "Show formatting option”. This opens the list of format options. Choose the type of format you want for the DVD. If you use only Windows, the most convenient type to choose is the live file system. Click the "Next" button.  Windows formats the DVD at this point.

    -          Test the disc by dragging and dropping a file to the DVD. You are now able to save files to the disk.

I read the above two answers but there was nothing inherent in the answer to solve the problem.

I keep putting a DVD-R disk in my laptop's drive to copy files to it and nothing happens as directed in the above-mentioned directions. I don't ever remembering to format a CD or DVD disk before. My copy programs always just copied what I needed onto the disk. Years ago, there used to be a way to format diskettes, but I don't find anything within my Windows 8 to do this. DOS formatting was so much easier!!??!!

When I select "burn files to disc" I get no dialogue boxes showing formatting options.  I see the file that I've selected, and nothing happens.  This most frustrating.  Please help.

"The media in the drive is not formatted".  I have had Windows 8.1 for 24 hours and cannot find a method to format a DVD.  When the DVD is inserted the drive is recognized, but the DVD is not and no prompts appear ever.

What do you suggest?  Otherwise blank recordable DVDs are not much use with Windows 8.1.
