same thing happened to me. I finally found that my stuff was not under my Desktop/user account but was below it in the Computer/C drive/Users/user account directory. I just copied my folders from the directory under Computer/Cdrive/Users/user account to the one under Desktop and now i can at least get to all my stuff again.
Accidentally Deleted .bak File from RegEdit
Hi there
I logged on to my laptop tonight and clicked on my user profile as always. It came up with a message saying I could not log on.
Long story short I entered into Regedit via safe mode. Some how I managed to delete the .bak file from my user profile thinking this was the file causing the issue. When I rebooted the laptop and signed into my profile it basically gave me a message saying Preparing your Desktop.
Once this completed it logged me in to my profile with default settings. All my files and documwnts are now missing.
I have some crucial documents there. Is there anyway to recover this data. System recovery doesn't work at all. Please Help.
Thanks

What folders can you see under C:\Users?
When you invoke rstrui.exe, can you see any System Restore points?
Since you have some crucial documents that are missing, can you retrieve them from your external backup?

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Forum.
".bak" is a filename extension commonly used to signify a backup copy of a file. When a program is about to overwrite an existing file (for example, when the user saves the document he or she is working on), the program may first make a copy of the existing file, with .bak appended to the filename.
Have you taken the backup of the registry prior to deleting .bak File from registry?
Method 1
You can follow the steps mentioned in method 1 from the following link instead of deleting the .bak File from registry.
You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon” error message

Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. You can use the following link in order to back up and restore the registry in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/
Method 2
You can try performing system restore and check if you can get back the saved documents and files but there is no surety that you will be able to recover deleted items but you can give a try by doing System Restore.
It takes the computer back to the point when the problem didn’t exist. See if you can find a suitable restore point where the problem hadn’t shown up.
