How to install a driver that is in .cat format?

I have an Asus PB278Q monitor, and the latest driver from the Asus website is in .cat format.  Double clicking just gives a Security Catalog window.  I'm using Win 8.1 Pro which is reporting the monitor as Generic PnP (driver in Device Manager is the Microsoft one from 6/21/2006 version 6.3.9600.16384) .  NVidia control panel seems to know a little more about the monitor, but I can't seem to get the 60Hz setting to 'stick', keeps reverting to 59Hz.

Yes there are specific drivers for monitors - they often allow you to change settings and other features standard monitors do not have. The generic driver simply allows for the "standard" driver that applies the common generic settings all monitors have.

There should be an .inf file related to the .cat file -- the .inf file will identify which drivers files are necessary for your specific hardware.

My specific issue seems to be Windows 10 -- it could not migrate this monitor to Windows 10 - It was able to identify my secondary monitor (Samsung) and migrate its drivers.. the ASUS drivers however are being rejected by Windows 10 and ASUS does not have them listed as of yet.

    Hi,

Check at ASUS again... there are two downloads... Even then, it doesn't appear to be a driver, but a program to use special features of the monitor...

    ASUS MultiFrame Software V1.1.0.3

It may identify itself better with the software installed... I don't think that there actually such a thing as a specific driver for a monitor... I have never installed one...

If you right click on your Desktop and select Screen Resolution, what shows up for "Display" ?

Mine shows SDM-S71, which is the model on my Sony monitor, and there has been nothing installed to furnish that info... this came directly from the monitor internally.

I wouldn't worry about the 59 hertz thing... it's not enough to worry about...
