Touchpad gestures/scrolling/pointer not working after windows 8.1 update on Dell Inspiron 11 3137

Just got a brand new laptop, Dell Inspiron 11 3137, and updated to windows 8.1. The touchpad does not work properly now; gestures/scrolling/pointer not working. I've spent over 12 hours getting windows 8.1 installed and then troubleshooting this issue. I've contacted Dell; added the driver from Dell, even tried installing the latest driver from Synaptic. I even tried setting the Synaptic app to run under the windows 8 version.

Touchpads have been around a long time. It's the last thing I expect not to work properly.

At this point I am ready to send the laptop back and call it quits on windows.

Can anybody help with this? Looks like I am not the only one having this issue.

    Hi,

The touchpad driver for Windows 8.1 has to be developed by Dell. You can also check the Windows optional updates when there are any latest update for your touchpad.

Check in Windows updates if any driver updates are available. If so, install the same and check if it helps.

    a)       Press “Windows Logo” + “W” keys from the keyboard.

    b)       Type “Updates” in the search bar and click on “Install optional updates” from the left pane.

    c)       From the “Windows Update” window, click on “Check for Updates” on the top left corner to receive a fresh list of updates and install all the updates listed there.

Please post back if you face any issues related to Windows and we will be glad to assist you further.

    Hello Karthik

Is Microsoft actively working on this issue with the touchpad in windows 8.1. After searching the internet I see that is a recurring issue. Is there active issue logged at MS for this?

    Hello Karthik,

    Thank you for your reply.

I have completed all of the steps you suggested. In fact I completed these with the Dell helpdesk support person.

Is there another driver from MS that will get this to work for me?

Or is there another software application that I can install to get this to work?

    Hi,

Do you get any error message when you use the laptop

You might be facing this issue due to an outdated or corrupted touchpad drivers. I suggest you  to try the following steps and check if it helps.

Method 1: Hardware and devices troubleshooter ****

The hardware and devices troubleshooter can detect and fix errors and incorrect settings in devices. You can refer these steps to run this troubleshooter:

    a) Press Windows key +X, select Control panel

    b) Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons

    c) Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel

    d) Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.

Method 2: Un-install and re-install touch pad drivers from the manufacturer’s website and see if that helps:

    Step 1: un-install the drivers:

    Follow these steps:

    a.       Press “Windows Key + W” from the keyboard.

    b.      Type “device Manager” without quotes in the search box and hit enter.

    c.       Right click on the touchpad drivers and select “Uninstall”.

    d.      Restart the computer once it is uninstalled.

Step 2: Download the latest touchpad drivers for “Windows 8.1” from manufacturer’s website.
