I have a Windows 7, Home, 64bit and an Android 4.3 phone. I cannot import pictures from the phone to PC.
- Using USB cable I connect Samsung Android phone to the PC.
- Windows begins driver installation and displays "Failed to install MTP driver".
The steps I performed included:
- I installed the latest driver available on the Samsung Website.
- This driver for some reason is not being used by Windows because every time I connect the phone Windows begins its own installation of the driver which fails.
- I ran hardware diagnostics on the USB port connected to the phone and got "Child device is disabled".
- I tried most of the suggestions related to this topic on the forum. None worked.
- I spoke with Samsung tech support and ran their software, Kies, designed to connect Samsung phones to Windows 7. Kies fails with the error message saying that some security program prevented it from establishing USB connection.
- I re-ran Samsung's Kies with Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials disabled. It still doesn't work.

2014-02-16T22:29:18+00:00 Sounds good. I did connect the phone to another Windows 7 laptop before I contacted the forum on this issue.
I did have the same MTP driver installation failure on the laptop as well BUT miraculously the Windows pictures Import app worked, and I was able to move pics/video from the phone to laptop even with the MTP driver install failure. Go figure.

- The Driver Software Installation dialog box pops up.
- It says: Device driver software was not successfully installed

2014-02-16T18:35:06+00:00 Those file system devnodes can be ignored for now. They correspond to a different device (likely a card reader).
Sounds like the Samsung drivers are still attempting to be installed. Can you uninstall the Samsung drivers completely, by right clicking on the Samsung_Android node in device manager and uninstalling it? Repeat for the MTP USB devnode as well so we get into a cleaner state. You can do this while the device is connected. Then reconnect the device and see what appears in Device Manager.
Once you've done the above, inspect %windir%\inf\setupapi.dev.log. The final entries on that log would show what driver is being installed. If you aren't sure, copy and paste the last entries that match the timestamp of your recent re-connect/install attempt. The device id should start with "USB\VID_,,," for an Android device.
