Windows Live Movie Maker - Sound but no Picture!

I've got a Panasonic SD Cam Corder which saves the files as .MOD, I've been using Windows Movie Maker to change these files over to WMV files with no problems at all using Windows 7.

However since I've bought a new computer which has Windows 8 on and the Windows Live Essentials wasn't on there I've downloaded it from Microsoft, however as per normal i transfer the .MOD files over to the Movie Maker and save the film as either MP4 or Movie Maker (WMV), trouble is now there is sound but no picture!!!

Am i doing something wrong or has anyone got any suggestions as I'm completely at a loss as to what to do, even when i open it in Microsoft Media Player the same thing happens i.e. Sound but no Picture..

As I've said I've been using this software for ages with no problems until I've bought a new computer.. Grrrrr!

Anyone please help as i have loads of MOD files that need to be converted over from Christmas.

Thank you,

I am having the same problem, viewing MP4 video. Sound, but no picture. All was ok viewing on December 26, 2013 but last night I tried to make a movie, didn't work, WMM said the file was corrupted. I couldn't view it in WL Photo Gallery but I could on RealPlayer. I did as you said above and got this below.

    AMD Radeon 7400 HD Series

    Version 13.251.0.0

    Date: 13/12/2013

Does this "seem out of date" to you?

Should I uninstall, then reinstall Windows Live Essentials? I tried the Repair, which worked in the past when there was a problem accessing Skydrive, but it did nothing for me on this.

I just started having this problem, with MP4 video. It was fine when I viewed it on December 26, but last night when I looked at the same videos I couldn't see the picture, could only get the sound. Also, wouldn't work in Movie Maker, said the file was corrupted. But I tried it with RealPlayer, and it worked fine. But I want to use Movie Maker in WLE for my blog. So, what to do? Uninstall WLE, then reinstall? I already tried the Repair option in Uninstall, which always works when I can't connect to Skydrive, but it didn't work for this.

Two things can cause the black screen (no video) in the final movie:

    1. Outdated graphics driver - run dxdiag and go to the Display tab.  Find the maker of your graphics card/chip and the date of the driver.  Then go to their website (e.g. Intel, AMD or NVIDIA) and run a driver update utility.
    2. Incompatible source file - use a program like Freemake Video Converter to turn the problem file into .wmv format and use that in your project instead.  If you install any freeware (like Freemake), be sure to choose the Custom Install option so you can uncheck any add-ons you don't want.

    Hi James Osborne-MSFT,

Even I'm facing a similar problem. I have a school project. I made the movie, but when I save it, and then open it, it only has the sound, but no display. In that case, what should I do? the file had .wlmp extension. So, when I saved it, it appears to have no display. This is my first movie.. Kindly reply as soon as you read it. As far as the codecs are concerned, i found one error and then it was fixed, but still no display.

    Thanks!

    Hi James Osborne-MSFT,

The only workaround at this point is to convert the .MOD file to .WVM file for it to work. There is a possibility that it is mainly on the codec side issue. We will update this thread once a permanent fix has been found by our experts.

    Thanks!
