My computer freezes whenever I need admin rights (and other problems)

Okay so when I start up my computer 90% of the time it just stays frozen on my desktop background, no explorer or anything, I can't move my mouse or do anything. To get it to work I have to press sleep on my keyboard and then wake it up. The exact same thing happens when I need admin rights for anything on my computer, I really need help with this and don't send me a download link because I've tried that and the download needs admin rights (obviously meaning I have to restart my computer and can't get the troubleshooter started)

Any help would be great, thanks.

Hi, I'm no longer having the problem at start up. But I am when I need admin rights.

I've done everything you've said and still just freezes on my desktop background (with no windows explorer available) when I need admin rights.

I really need help with this asap, some of the programs I need to use for university require admin rights everytime.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Nathan,

Thank you for the reply. I would suggest you to follow these steps:

Method 1: Run the System File Checker tool and check if the issue persists.

System File Checker tool will determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Method 2: If you have different user account check if it works fine. If you don't have another user account to check the issue, let's create a new user account.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-user-account

If it works in a new user account, then you can consider the old user account as corrupt. You can check the link below on how to ‘Fix a corrupted user profile’

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Nathan,

I would appreciate if you could answer the following questions:

    1. Have you made any recent changes to your computer?
    2. Which antivirus application are you using?
    3. What is the make and model of your computer?

This issue might occur if the operating system files are corrupt/altered. Sometimes it will happen because of third party applications or virus infections.

I would suggest you to follow the steps provided below and update us on the status of the issue.

Step 1: Let's boot your computer to safe mode with networking and check.

To boot to safe mode, refer to the suggestions from the following link:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

After logging to the safe mode,

Run the Windows performance fixit from the following fixit

    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/slow_windows_performance

Also run virus scan using Microsoft Safety Scanner.

    Refer to this link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

If the computer works fine in safe mode with networking, perform clean boot to find the root cause.

Step 2: Let’s clean start the operating system and check.

We recommend you to clean start the operating system to determine if other programs are interfering with this application. To do this, see this article on how to clean start your computer:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After checking the functionality in clean boot, follow the suggestions under “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot”.

Hope the information provided is useful. If the issue persists, reply here and we will be glad to help you.
