I have been trying to play a regular CD on Windows 8.1. I am not trying to burn a CD I simply want to listen to a regular CD. Nothing happens when I put a CD into the CD chamber. What must I do or what must I get to play a regular CD?

    Hello Dave and all.

None of these suggestions that you gave help I had already tried them and when you suggested these remedies again I tried again and failed once again. So I thought to myself if it is not the programming it has to be the hardware. I was absolutely correct. Once I changed out the CD player unit hard drive that came with the machine, and replaced it with a new one that did Blu-ray as well as regular DVD and CD's, I no longer had a problem all CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays plate without any problem. Although the manufacturer states that the machine plays Blu-ray and CDs it does not have program software that is compatible with the machine and the CD player unit. I recommend this to everyone who has tried and failed and has spent money with other software programs.

Sometimes having "exclusive mode" enabled "blocks" the audio CD so try disabling "exclusive mode":

Right-click the speaker icon in the Notification area of the Taskbar > Playback devices >then under the "Playback" tab click on "Speakers" (or the Default Device) > Properties > Advanced > then remove the checkmark in front of "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" > OK

    Hi,

    Just a few questions first, to get a clear picture of the issue;

    1)      What is the make and model of the computer?

    2)      Is the CD\DVD drive listed in the Windows explorer?

    3)      Do you get any error message when you insert a disc?

This issue could be caused due to various reasons like hardware error, incorrect settings etc,. Let’s try these steps and check.

Method 1: Check the device status in Device manager

I would suggest you to first check the status of the device in device manager. The device status will usually show the reason for the issue if any device is not working properly. Try these steps:

    a)      Press Windows key + X, select Device manager

    b)      Locate your CD\DVD drive and right click to select properties

    c)       Check for the device status under general tab.

Method 2: Hardware and devices troubleshooter

I would suggest you to run the built-in Hardware and devices troubleshooter to check if this issue is caused due to any hardware errors. Refer these steps:

    a)      Press Windows key +X, select Control panel

    b)      Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons

    c)       Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel

    d)      Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.

    Method 3: Update driver

This issue could have been caused due to an outdated driver also. I would suggest you to install the updated Windows 8.1 driver from the manufacturer’s website and check if the issue persists.

You can also refer to the article mentioned below to know how to burn a CD using Media Player.

Burn a CD or DVD in Windows Media Player

Hope this helps. Please get back to us with the status of the issue so that we can help you accordingly.

I am having the same problem that autorun and autoplay do not function. Have tried the above and also checked the settings in control panel / autoplay.
