Changing the preferred IP address in windows 7

Anoop, you are not addressing the OP's question.

Where is the "(Preferred)" IP address setting stored?  How do we clear that.

Nobody asked how to change their IP address, we want to know simply how to change the PREFFERED IP address.

I want to CLEAR the Preferred setting so that I will not automatically get the same IP address next time I do an ipconfig /renew (particularly if say, I used a different network adapter).

If you are on a router you can reserve an IP in the DHCP settings or you can hardset the IP in Windows 7 to an address range within what the router uses.

This is also not answering the question.

Simply: how does one tell Windows to stop storing a certain address as "Preferred".  Perhaps we do NOT actually prefer that address, we are NOT connected to a router, and we do NOT want to manually change our IP address.  We simply wish to be given a DIFFERENT IP address when we ask DHCP next time.

Did any one answer this question  "how to change the preferred IP address" I have a VM that when I restarted it add a second IP address 192.254.45.277(Preferred) I want to remove this IP address and use the static IP I have assigned to this VM.

You may manually assign the default gateway and the IP address and check if it works fine. Before assigning the IP address and the Default gateway manually, make a note of the IP address on the computer. To do this open Command prompt and type ipconfig and press enter. This will display the IP address, make a note of it.

To assign the IP address and default gateway manually, follow the steps below:

a)       In system tray, right click network icon. Choose Open Network and Sharing Center.

b)       Right click on Local Area Connection and click on Properties.

c)       Double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and assign the IP address manually.

Example: Old IP address is 192.168.0.1

d)       Change the IP address to 192.168.0.50

e)       Let the Subnet mask and default gateway be the same.

f)        Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

g)       Default gateway, usually would be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1

h)       Click on Apply and Ok, restart the computer, and verify if it helps to fix the issue.

Thanks for your reply, however I have already done that but still the same issue.

My question actually is how to change the preferred IP address if you have both on your machine?

Just for your info, I have an application that read and reflect the IP (preferred) address and communicate with another machine on the same Local workgroup network, and it always reflect the IP address of the usb dongle (when connected) since it is the preferred! So when the application on the other machine trys to communicate with my machine it uses the wrong IP address.
