Windows 8.1 and Display Resolution

I installed windows 8.1 64-bit on my Dell XPS 430.  The graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 3600.  The driver version for the graphics card is 8.97.10.6.

My monitor is a Gateway FPD1775W.

The tag on the monitor says the resolution is 1280x720.  When I change my resolution this in Windows, I can't run any apps because it says the resolution is too low.  When I change the resolution to 1280x1024 (recommended), everything is distorted (flat).  Is this a problem with the driver for my graphics card?

The drivers install with no problem.  I believe the problem must be with my monitor.

I was looking at the documentation for the monitor and it says the maximum resolution is 1280x720.  I switched back to my Windows 7 hard drive and I have the same distortion problem if I go over 1280x720.

I can set Windows 8 to have resolution 1280x720, but no apps will open saying the resolution is too low.  Is there any solution to this?  Can I return my copy of Windows 8 if there is no solution?

    Hi,

Dell has not released any compatible driver with Windows 8. However AMD has drivers available for Windows 8. I would suggest you to download the driver and install it in compatibility mode and check. You can download the drivers from the following link.

Let us know about the status of the issue. We would be happy to help you further.

    Hi Kevin,

It seems to be an issue with the Graphics card drivers. I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it works for you.

    Method 1:

Try installing the updated Graphics card drivers from the Dell website or from Windows Update and check if it helps.

Follow the steps to update the Video card driver:

    a.       Press Windows Key + X key and click Device Manager.

    b.      Expand ‘Display Adapters’.

    c.       Right-click on the Video card listed and click on ‘Update Driver Software’.

    Method 2:

If you do not find compatible drivers, then try installing the drivers in compatibility mode and check if the issue persists.

Step 1: Download the Windows 7 drivers from the Dell website.

    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx

Step 2: Install the driver in compatibility mode.

Follow the steps to install in Compatibility mode:

    a.       Right click the Graphics card driver setup file and select Properties then tap or click the Compatibility tab.

    b.      Place a check in the Run this program in compatibility mode for: box.

    c.       Tap or click the drop down box and select a previous operating system, then tap or click OK.

    d.      Try installing the Graphics card driver and check.
