Just an observation;
Given the price of a win7 compatible scanner, or all in one, is it worth the hassle of having to use virtualxp? After all it was never a top end scanner

I have a CanoScan D2400u, legacy scanner which has worked well, and I am now trying to use under Windows 7 (Professional and x64).
Canon doesn't support this device under Windows 7. However, it does provide a driver for XP and Vista (x32)
I am finding it really hard to determine if this can be made to work. There is limited material I have found which suggests that Vista drivers work under Windows 7 and that x32 drivers work under an X64 version of Windows 7.
Can anyone confirm this is true? What are the "rules" here?
If it is true, how can I configure Windows? The scanner shows up as a no-name scanner in Device Manager. Selecting it and then going to Action, Add Legacy Hardware gets me a wizard, with two options: "Search for and install the hardware automatically", which find nothing, and "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list" which provides a list which appears to be mainly printers with no scanners.
If I choose "Update Driver Software" and browse to the Canon provided driver download, then the message is "windows was unable to install your scanner".
Any thoughts would be appreciated. (Except "buy a new scanner" :-) )
Thanks in advance
Peter

You are not wrong! To simplify my question, I omitted to say that I have two good scanners from that era, including a dedicated slide scanner. So I will persist for a bit, and perhaps write up the complete solution when I get it. Thanks for the thought.
TBH, I haven't got XPMode to actually try it out any longer, but does this assist re sharing - https://blogs.technet.com/b/windows_vpc/archive/2009/12/22/folder-sharing-between-windows-7-and-vm.aspx?Redirected=true ( It is a little old and was just found via a google ).
Hope it helps and do let us know if you get it working or need more help. I'm sure someone will assist. More here - https://blogs.technet.com/b/windows_vpc/
That's a very useful thought. Fascinating. Yes, it does appear that the XP mode installs the device driver: the scanner test runs.
Now, whether I can turn this into a usable method for scanning my slides and photos or not might take a while. I have to install a TWAIN scanning application under XP mode, and then figure out how to map the different file systems so that I get my scans into the same place as all my other images!!!!
It's probably going to cost as much time-wise to make it all work, as it does to buy Windows 7 supported scanner! But your assistance much appreciated. I will report whether persistence pays off!
Thanks again
Peter
As you have W7 Pro, it seems to say the USB scanner works in XPMode. ( which is free as long as your OS qualifies, and Pro does ).
