Windows 8.1 Media Player

I have a new Windows 8.1 Laptop that has a Windows Media Player App and am thinking about buying an All In One with Windows 8.1. I'm spoiled by my old Vista that crashed where I could watch TV using Windows Media Center while using my computer and minimizing the TV picture..  My Vista desktop had a built in cable connection.

Question. If I buy an All In One and can find a Cable/USB tuner that will work with Windows 8 will I be able to view cable TV using the Media Player? If so, Will I be able to use my Windows Media Center Remote?

no, You will have to upgrade to Windows 8.1 pro with Media Center or find a third party Media Player- such As VLC Media Player or Cyberlink's Power DVD- in order to watch TV. . Hope this helps and if you need  any further assistance please post and we will be glad to assist you.

I had a problem playing video in 8.1 media player. I downloaded " Freemake Video Converter", did my editing in it and converted it to AVI format which worked perfectly in media player. So give it a try, it works.

See if you can find a Windows 7 machine with a tuner built in.

PS: I don't consider myself computer illiterate, but do I have a clue as to what I'm talking about and trying to do?

you will need to purchase the Windows Media Center Feature Pack ($10 if you buy

a computer with Pro, $100 if a non Pro version). Media PLAYER will not work, you

    need Media CENTER.

if you buy a compatible tuner ( pick one out and check here first before

purchasing) you may also need an external IR receiver and other bits depending

on whether or not the computer comes with this.

best advice is to post the model number and manufacturer of the computer and

the same for  the tuner you intend to buy in the Music, Photo, and Video topic

and ask for advice there. The remote itself SHOULD work with any WMC compatible

    IR receiver/tuner.
