This is a known issue for MS mice that have a tilt wheel. Until the drivers are fixed, some people report that this can be worked around by replacing the drivers of the mouse by other compatible drivers for a mouse without a tilt wheel(i.e. for a cheaper mouse in the same line). You will lose tilt functionality, but the scroll will work properly. People reporting this fix claim to have used drivers for a wired mouse instead. MS's intellimouse drivers will let you select what device you have when you install them, so this is not a hard fix at all.
Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000 scrolling issue
Using a Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000 and scrolling on certain applications is horrible. For instance I have to scroll as fast as possible just to move down a tiny bit.
Programs that have crippled scrolling
- Torque X
- Dragon Age
My guess is basically anything that doesn't load default windows scrolling fucntions
I also noticed that this mouse has three clicks for the scroll wheel: left, middle and right click. But you can only set the functions of the middle click. I was wondering if there was any way to change what the left and right middle click buttons do.
Thanks!

2014-04-12T02:17:35+00:00 I had this problem as well and was ready to pitch the mouse for just about any other solution. After trying 10 or so different driver swaps, I read somewhere that unplugging and replugging the wireless connector in the USB port would resolve this. I didn't believe it, but this this as a last ditch effort and it totally fixed the problem. The mouse is usable (finally!) and isn't nearly as "twitchy" (I would avoid even brushing the scroll wheel)
I had this problem in all apps (Chrome, Word, etc)

2009-12-11T19:25:20+00:00 Hello,
I just wanted to thank you both for your replies. Now, I have tried reinstalling and have had no luck with that.
I have tried fidling with the mouse settings in the game and in the control pannel, neither have worked. I have even tried disabling the scroll wheel, which works for windows based programs but even with the mouse scroll wheel disabled it is still usable in those programs. This is why I am convinced that this has something to do with a driver or perhaps a missing file; I am not sure.
The reason that I did not post this problem on EA's or GarageGames' forums is because I never had any issues with my previous mouse.
New Issues
I am also experiencing abnormal scrolling while using Live Messenger. It will either go too fast or not at all.
For some reason I cannot bind mouse button 5 in any games (middle click = 3, left thumb button = 4, right button = 5).
Note: Yes, Dragon Age is a game, however Torque X is not. It is more of a game engine/editor.

2009-12-10T04:38:35+00:00 Hi Buri13,
Welcome to Microsoft Answers community.
You may try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for mouse and check if the problem persists. Before trying the below steps create a restore point.
1. Click on start button.
2. In the search box type devmgmt.msc and then press enter.
3. Select the mouse device and right click on it
4. Now select Unstall.
- Restart your computer; this should automatically install proper drivers for it.
You can also download the drivers for it from manufacture’s website and install it.
For more information visit the below links:

If the problem still persists in Torque X and Dragon Age, then it would be better to contact those games support team.
