Original title: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex external drive

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1tb external drive.  I can not get my labtop (8.1) to recognize the it.  although the firs time I connected to the labtop it work fine (could see/accesss all the files). But now all I get is "UNRECOGNIZABLE USB DEVICE".  I have also seen driver not loaded on occasion.

Has anyone seen this problem and know of a fix for it??

Do not see my goflex in device manager, computer or disk management.  Seagate dashboard is saying to connect it but it already is connected.  White light is on.

I have now got somewhere with this problem.   Whilst the Goflex appeared in device manager and devices and printers it did not appear in disc management.   It was hidden along with the CDrom when the disc appeared it showed as disc 1, online, usb and MBR, no disc letter.   Once I had found it I was able to give it a disc letter and it then appeared in explorer.  Many thanks for the help offered.

My machine is an Acer Aspire E1-570 running Windows 8.1, it has 3 usb ports, 1 is

version 3 and the others version 2.

Everything worked fine until 10 days ago.  I had completed a full backup to the Seagate

Freeagent Go Flex without problem.   Now the Go Flex does not work.  The GoFlex does show

in Disk Managemant.  It appears in Devices and Printers and Properties shows that the

device is working property.  It appears in Device Manager.   GoFlex does not show in

Windows Explorer and I am unable to upload or download files using GoFlex.  I have

followed every suggestion on this site but it does not work.  I have updated Windows, Seagate and checked for updates with Acer but no update is available.

The GoFlex works perfectly well on other machines and USB sticks work on the Aspire USB ports.

    Hi Kenneth,

We need more information to assist you, please answer these questions.

    1. Do you face same issue with all external Devices?
    2. Did you check the hard drive status in the Disc Management?

When you connect a device to your PC, such as a printer, mouse, or keyboard, Windows automatically tries to install the correct driver for your device. If Windows can't find a driver for the device, here are several suggestions you can try. Refer to these methods and check.

Method 1: I would suggest you to “Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter” by referring this link.

What if a device isn't installed properly: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/what-device-isnt-installed-properly

    Method 2:

Refer to these steps to open the Disc Management.

    1. Press Windows and R keys together.
    2. Type in diskmgmt.msc and press enter.

Check the hard drive status in the Disc Management. If there is no drive letter assigned to hard drive, assign a drive letter to hard drive and check.

    a. Right-click a partition, logical drive, or volume, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

    b. Do one of the following:

     - To assign a drive letter, click Add, click the drive letter you want to use, and then click OK.

     - To modify a drive letter, click it, click Change, click the drive letter you want to use, and then click OK.

     - To remove a drive letter, click it, and then click Remove.

Hope this information helps you. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.
