To Whom it May Concern;

 Why can't I find the "C:\Windows\system32\dllcache folder which is supposed to contain a backup of "ALL the Compressed System Files on Win8.1 so that SFC can access this Folder as reference when a System File is missing, corrupted & in need of repair or replacement?

    Hi

    The dllcache folder has not been a part of any Windows version since Windows XP. The Windows Resource Protection component replaced the need for the dllcache folder.

    Here are links with more information.

    Windows Resource Protection:

    About Windows Resource Protection:

    All of the protected system files are stored in the C:\Windows\Winsxs\Backup folder.

    Regards

    SFC is calling for dllcache & all compressed system files  in win8.1 & since  as you pointed out the folder & files havn't been available since XP I guess you also explained why SFC can't repair/replace missing/corrupted system files in win8.1 , which is exactly the issue that I was experiencing! SFC does not recognize, nor can it access C:\Windows\Winsxs\Backup folder which I might add was also not present on my system ,but after a re-installation it did, but sfc was still reporting missing and corrupt files that it could not correct, even with first running dism.exe.

    Hi,

    As Ronnie suggested System File Checker, Windows Vista, 7 8/8.1 no longer has the Windows File Protection component that’s part of Windows XP and Windows 2000. In those OSs, this component protects key OS files. Vista has Windows Resource Protection (WRP), which, in addition to protecting key OS files, protects key areas of the registry. Files that are necessary to start Vista are stored in the %windir%\winsxs\Backup folder.

    You can try running the SFC scan in Safe mode and check if you get same errors.

    Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

    Hope this helps.
