I want to update an old laptop from Windows XP SP2 to SP3. Can someone please guide me through the updating process? Will it effect my files or programs? Thanks.

If you have problems obtaining the service pack from Windows Update, you can download the stand-alone update package from the Download Center. 2014-03-24T15:58:31+00:00 I think that José was trying to steer you toward a thread where one of my stock replies is shown but accidentally pasted the wrong link. Anyway, my stock reply for getting from SP2 to SP3 is...
Before you install SP3 read this article…
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717
…and if your PC is an HP Pavilion, Presario or Media Center and has an AMD processor you need to install this patch before installing SP3…
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=pv-60484-2
…to find out if you have an AMD processor...
- Hold down the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and hit the Pause Break key or click Start, click Run, type winver and hit enter
- Your processor type is shown in the Computer: section
Then install SP3 by downloading and running from...
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=24
…you can ignore the text that says that it is for network installations and also ignore the text advising Windows/Microsoft Update if only updating one PC. Ignore any recommendation from Microsoft to use Windows Updates.
Then try and get up to date with Windows Updates.

2014-03-24T16:44:03+00:00 Wouldn't it just be faster to right click my computer and click properties or read the sticker on your PC? My computer is a Toshiba so I shouldn't need the patch. I do not have an AMD processor I have Intel Celeron.
