Cardreader problems with different MSI Boards / configurations

I'm experiencing some strange problems with different card-readers on different MSI Motherboards.

In the event logs it warns me:

Log Name: System

Source: Disk

Event ID: 11

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\DR3 (In different systems the number varies)

Log Name: System

Source: Kernel-PnP

Event ID: 29

The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN (varies and followed by name of USB device)

The errors above seems the cause instability to the system and can bring up strange problems.

(Services can't be loaded and even the LAN card can stop detecting the connected UTP cable to ADSL router/modem)

When I put an SD card in it does read.

Cardreaders I used:

MS-Tech All-in-One Zwart metaal USB 2.0 LU-188S

3,5" OEM All-in-One Zwart / Zilver USB 2.0 CK002D

MS-Tech All-in-One Zwart metaal USB 3.0 LU-198S

No drivers need to be installed because they are provided by the OS: Windows 8.1 64 bits Dutch (clean install from scratch with DVD)

I installed every driver provided by MSI (LiveUpate)

SYSTEM 1

H81M-E35 (Updated with latest BIOS)

CPU 1150 Intel Core i3 4130 54W 3,40GHz / BOX

Kingston ValueRAM RAM 4096MB DDR3/1600 Kingston CL11

1,0TB WesternDigital WD10EZEX SATA3/64MB/7200rpm

SYSTEM 2

FM2-A75MA-P33 (Updated with latest BIOS)

FM2 AMD Trinity A8-5500 65W 3.20GHz / BOX

Kingston ValueRAM D3 4GB 1333-999 KVR

1,0TB WesternDigital WD10EZEX SATA3/64MB/7200rpm

SYSTEM 3

H87M-P33 (Updated with latest BIOS)

1150 Intel Core i3 4130 54W 3,40GHz / BOX

Kingston ValueRAM D3 4GB 1333-999 KVR

1,0TB WesternDigital WD10EZEX SATA3/64MB/7200rpm

Swapped RAM and harddrives, tried different Cardreaders USB2.0 and 3.0

When I detach the Cardreader the errors disappear.

Does anyone know what is going on or what I'm doing wrong?

The next I would do is to test another motherboard from a different brand and/or cardreader.

But I really don't get it when something pretty standard as a cardreader gives me so much hassle.

Thanks for you time.

    Hi,

**Method 1: Run the Hardware troubleshooter and check.**Follow the steps to run the troubleshooter:

    a. Press Windows key + C on your keyboard to show the Charms bar.

    b. Type Troubleshooting and click Troubleshooting under Settings.

    c. Now type Hardware Troubleshooter in the search option.

    d. Click on Hardware troubleshooter to run the troubleshooter.

Method 2: Install latest drivers for the USB card reader and check.

Download the Windows 7 drivers from the Manufacturer’s website and install them in compatibility mode.

    a.       Right click on the driver setup file and select “Properties”.

    b.      Select “Compatibility” Tab.

    c.       Make a check mark next to Run this program in “Compatibility mode” and select previous version of Windows supported by the software, from the drop down list.

    d.      Then click on “Apply” and “Ok” option.

    e.       Then install the driver.

    f.       Then restart your computer and check how it works.

Method 3: Install optional updates and check.

    a. At the Start screen, type Windows Update.

    b. Click or tap Settings on the right side of the screen, and then select Install optional updates from the left results.

    c. When the Windows Update control panel opens, click on “Check for Updates” on the top left corner to receive a fresh list of updates.

Note: If the issue still persists, then I would suggest you to update chipset drivers.

Hope it helps. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to let us know. We will be glad to help you further.

Thanks for you answer. I put it on automatic. En testing it right now.

I also got an answer that it could be the Bios which doesn't seem the OS make aware it is a Card reader (removable device). I asked MSI for technical support aswell about this..

I encountered the same error when installing drivers for a PKI token on Windows 8.

I discovered the smart card service in the services MMC was set to disabled.

I switched it to auto start (didn't even manually start it) and retried the install and it seems to have done the trick.
