Why does Windows 7 have trouble with 64G exFAT?

Windows 7 as trouble with all my (3) of my Sandisk 64G SDXC cards (exFAT format). Windows 7 asks "Do you want to scan and fix SDXC (I:)?" but I did this before and it ruins the format and I have to reformat it with SD Format to recover it. Then Windows doesn't like it again.

When I "Continue without scanning" it sees the files and it can usually manipulate them (rename, move, delete, add new files, etc.). But this time it sees the files but it won't manipulate them. These are 2 brand new SD cards and one hasn't been inserted into the Android yet. In fact the Windows 7 computer put the files on the SD card but now it can't manipulate them.

Yes, I always - without fail "eject" the card before removing it!

My Androids are happy with the cards as they are formatted.

Any ideas what's going on? And more importantly - How do I get Windows 7 to accept these 64G SDXC exFAT cards?

Thanks for the help!

    Hello Wayne,

Thank you for keeping us updated.

It is good to know that the SD cards have started working again. However, I would suggest you to try the steps in the link posted by Ratandeep replied on April 24, 2014, whenever you face the issue next time.

In addition to that, please keep us posted with any other of your recurring issues on Windows in future. We'll be glad to assist you again.

    Thanks again for sharing!

    Ratandeep,

Thanks, but it appears it isn't necessary.

It started working this morning. Same SD cards that didn't work yesterday and same micro SD to SD adapter now work again.

    I still get the;

But if I continue without scanning it works OK.

Some day I'll try the "Scan and fix" option again and see how that goes.

    Thanks again for the help!

    Wayne

    Retandeep,

    Thanks for the reply.

I have tried formatting them in the past (This problem has been going on for a long time) and I forget the details right now but it didn't help. I'll try it again when I'm prepared to erase all the data.

But the cards work fine in my Androids. So, maybe the Androids cause the format to be incompatible with Windows?

I just tried Sandisk's fix quoted below but now my PC won't recognize 32 or 64 GB cards. It doesn't even see them installed so formatting them isn't an option. I backed up the registry but it only backed up the one line (I guess when I exported I had one line highlighted)

Do you have any idea how I put the lines back into the registry?

    Here's the Sandisk instructions:

SanDisk device NOT detected by Windows PC

Why did my Windows computer stop detecting my SanDisk device?

    Advanced Troubleshooting

Note: This article is advanced troubleshooting for a rare condition wherein a flash drive stops getting recognized on a Windows computer, but is still working on other computers. Please reference the following articles first before attempting the instructions in this article.

Cruzer flash drive NOT detected by Windows PC

Cruzer flash drive could not be detected due to drive letter conflict

Computer cannot detect SDHC (4GB-32GB) memory card

A corrupt registry entry could cause your SanDisk product to not be detected by the computer. Removing the registry keys created on installation of your SanDisk product will allow the computer to fully reinstall the device and may resolve the issue.

STEP 1 - Backup the registry

    1. Unplug the device from the USB port.
    2. Run regedit.

Windows XP: Go to Start > Run, type in regedit and then click OK.

Windows 7, 8 and Vista: Click the Start button, type regedit in the search box, and then press Enter.

    1. From the registry menu, choose File > Export.
    2. Name the file SNDK.reg and save it to your desktop.

STEP 2 - Remove SanDisk info from the registry

WARNING: DO NOT delete any registry key other than keys that include VID_0781. Deleting registry keys other than keys that include VID_0781 MAY cause your computer to not boot properly.

    1. From the registry menu, click Edit and choose Find.
    2. Type in VID_0781 and click Find Next.
    3. Once the search finishes, right-click the highlighted registry key and select delete.
    4. Press the F3 key to find the next registry key that includes VID_0781.
    5. Right-click the highlighted registry key and select delete.
    6. Repeat this process until the search returns with No results Found.

NOTE: Under Windows 7, 8 and Vista, some registry keys may be protected and cannot be deleted. Simply skip over these keys if you receive a message that the key cannot be deleted.

    1. Once all registry keys containing VID_0781 have been deleted, reboot your computer.
    2. Plug the device into the computer after it's finished rebooting.

    Hello Wayne,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft community forum.

I am sorry for late response.

It seems like file format has been corrupted. You might consider formatting the SD card using NTFS

file system and check if that fixes the issue.

Note: Make sure you back up the data before formatting the drive.

Refer these articles for further information on formatting disks and flash drive:

Create and format a hard disk partition

Formatting disks and drives: frequently asked questions

    Warning:

Formatting erases any existing files on a flash drive. If you format a flash drive that has files on it, the files will be deleted.

    I hope this information helps.

Please do let us know if you need any further assistance.

    Thank you
